Ice cold raindrops splatter a township road on the verge of yet another thunderstorm. I just love the sense of drama that unfolds as summer thunderstorms approach. Beautiful blue skies are transformed into seething masses of darkness. Gentle afternoon breezes morph into extreme gusts that buffet my body and drown out the sound of songbirds. I really like the feeling of chill that overtakes me as the afternoon heat is suddenly wiped away by outflow from the storm. Thunder booms in the background, distant at first, but growing ever more menacing as the storm approaches. The speed of the transition is breathtaking. Tranquillity erupts into turmoil, often in a matter of just minutes. I linger in the path of the storm for as long as possible. Photography seems almost incidental in these moments. It's a sheer adrenaline rush that I don't want to end. Photos help cement the mood of the moment, but don't otherwise add to it. Taking photos is really more of an instinct than an artistic process when I'm this close to the edge. I move out only when the heavy rains move in behind the front. And sometimes not even then.
