Engine: aircooled 790 cc flat twin, 45 hp.
Production: 1 of 3131 (1965-1969).
The Toyota Sports 800, a production model of the Publica Sports concept car unveiled at the 1962 Tokyo Motor Show, was placed on the market in April 1965 as a compact and lightweight sports car with two seats.
In converting the concept car into the production model, the sliding canopy was replaced with regular doors and a detachable roof. By mounting a highly aerodynamic body on the Publica-based platform and substantially reducing the weight, the Toyota Sports 800 not only produced a maximum speed of 155 km/h but also achieved excellent fuel economy.
Because of its sports car-grade performance and the detachable roof that gave easy access to open-top driving, the Toyota Sports 800 proved very popular, mainly among young drivers. The car also performed extremely well in motor sports, especially in long distance races where its reliability and fuel economy worked to its advantage. In the Fuji 24-hour race in 1967, a Toyota Sports 800 finished third after two Toyota 2000 GT's.
