In Wisconsin the Root River comfortably occupies its woods.

This river and these woods appear to be well-matched: Neither looks out-of-place in relation to the other. But maybe there is a simmering conflict between them that humans cannot perceive.

I had a vision of the Root River in southeastern Wisconsin, at a point approximately 7 miles (11 km) inland from Lake Michigan, on a spring evening.

By "had a vision of" what I actually mean is "took a picture of." As I activate the image sensor of my digital camera, I dramatically announce "I am having a vision!"

Here was Oak Creek in South Milwaukee, plainly visible from a blufftop, a half mile upstream from the western shore of Lake Michigan. by Tim Kiser

Here was Oak Creek in South Milwaukee, plainly visible from a blufftop, a half mile upstream from the western shore of Lake Michigan.

I stood on a bluff of glacial till to see this.

In my judgment, Oak Creek seems to be settling nicely into its new landscape, following the aggressive disruptions of the Wisconsin glaciation of ~20k yrs ago. The creek continues to exhibit adequate capability in the successful completion of basic tasks of fluvial geomorphology.

Oak Creek landscape with retaining wall.

As Oak Creek departs the dam of a mill pond in South Milwaukee, a concrete wall intervenes to prevent it from eroding the bluff on its left bank, which has houses on top of it (not shown). The wall incidentally affords a solid foundation for a creekside footpath.

Towering bluffs!, of till and sediments deposited by the Lake Michigan lobe of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, circa 13,000 years ago. by Tim Kiser

Towering bluffs!, of till and sediments deposited by the Lake Michigan lobe of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, circa 13,000 years ago.

Along Oak Creek in South Milwaukee, a short distance upstream from where it dumps into Lake Michigan (a/k/a its "mouth" but it's actually more like a butthole), were these bluffs of glacial till and lacustrine and glaciofluvial sediments.

As described on pages 61-63 of this PDF, this material is nowadays known by humans as the Oak Creek Formation, which was deposited in Late Pleistocene times, 14,000 to 12,500 years ago, during the Wisconsin glaciation. Bon appétit!

A creekbend!

"Rollin' on the river!" I said, and I smiled broadly in exhilaration at the fine view. But then one of my airpods fell from my ear and tumbled down the concrete slope into the water. It was during "Proud Mary" by Tina Turner.

This report by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers repeats several times that the creek's concrete lining was installed "in the 1960s and 1970s" and never gets any more specific than that.

Here was the former "Stallis Palace," a bar in West Allis, Wisconsin, in a building from 1928, as viewed in 2021. by Tim Kiser

Here was the former "Stallis Palace," a bar in West Allis, Wisconsin, in a building from 1928, as viewed in 2021.

Perhaps you've been unaware that "Stallis" is a nickname for "West Allis." You're not unaware anymore!

Google Street View shows that sometime between August 2021 and July 2023, the Stallis Palace ("Where Everyone's Royalty") went out and Odd-e's Pub ("Good Drinks, Great Company") went in. The building was painted black and gray sometime beteween May 2019 and August 2021.

Verily the building is from 1928, according to this municipal property record.

FOR FUN I looked at old West Allis city directories at ancestrylibrary.com, and found the building listed in the 1932 directory, the latest edition available: The entry for this address reads "Kelly Jos C soft drinks," and it also appears in the classified business listings under "Soft Drinks—Retail," along with dozens of other men's names at different addresses in this one suburb alone.

Prohibition was still on back then, which I assume is what accounts for all the interest in "soft drinks" wink wink.
