Replacing an earlier scanned slide with a better version 23-Feb-15, plus Topaz DeNoise AI 11-Apr-23.

United Arab Airlines eventually became Egypt Air.

Only in service for 10 years and broken up 2 years later...

British Eagle bought 4 Viscounts from United Arab Airlines which had been sitting in the desert. This one, SU-AKN became G-ATDR. The others being G-ANRS, G-ATDU & G-ATFN. They were full of particularly nasty creepy-crawlies and on one ferry flight from Cairo the F/O was bitten by a spider and they had to divert to Paris. On arrival at Liverpool they had to be fumigated (the aircraft, not the crew!).

This aircraft was delivered new to Misrair Egyptian Airlines in Jul-58 as SU-AKN. After an agreement between the Egyptian and Syrian Governments, Misrair and Syrian Arab Airlines were merged to form United Arab Airlines in Aug-60 (although Syria changed it's mind in 1961 and went it's own way).

After being stored at Cairo for a while it was sold to British Eagle International Airlines in May-65. It was stored at Liverpool in Nov-68 when British Eagle ceased operations. It was ferried to Blackbushe, UK, a year later in Nov-69 and broken up there by May-70.

SU-ALE had been delivered to United Arab Airlines in December 1960. It crashed nine years later at Riem, on 9 February 1970.

Due to buffeting, the takeoff had to be rejected at a height of 30 feet. The aircraft landed back, overran the runway, struck through a fence and only came to halt a short distance before the first houses. The undercarriage was torn off and a small fire started, but was quickly extinguished. All 23 occupants were evacuated safely, but the aircraft was damaged beyond repair and scrapped at Riem. This photo was probably taken on the day immediately after the crash - the ripped off nose gear has still not been removed, and I think in the background you can see the gap where the aircraft broke through the airport fence. On other photos from after the crash, there is snow on the ground and aircraft - they must have been taken later (see below in the comments).

Early 1960's view from London-Heathrow (LHR) Terminal 3

Having re-scanned this transparency today (26-Apr-23), I expanded it to clean the spots off before I 'DeNoised' it. There's an engineer sat on the end of the Pan Am 707's starboard wing! It's only taken me 60 years to see that! Double click the photo to enlarge it!!!

SU-APD is turning onto its stand after landing at Riem.

Information from flickr - thanks to Guido Allieri:
SU-APD (20341/834) was delivered to United Arab Airlines (then the name for Egyptair) in January 1970. The plane was retired during the '90s (1994?) and stored in Manston to be seldom used for Cargo operations. In May 2004 the plane was sold to Tristar Air. Retired in May 2006, the plane was then scrapped in Cairo before March 2011.

SU-ALC is turning onto runway 07 for take-off, seen from an unusual angle with the approach lights in the picture. The Comet wears Egyptian Airlines titles on its tail instead of the registration that used to be placed there earlier (the aircraft is identified by the tiny letters LC on the nosewheel door). There’s a Paninternational BAC One-Eleven visible in the background on the right (helpful in dating this shot, as is the wooden fencing also visible in the background under the Comet’s belly).

SU-ALC was delivered new to Misrair in Jun-60, Misrair was renamed United Arab Airlines in Dec-60. Sadly, the aircraft was written off when it crashed 6miles/10km from Tripoli Airport, Libya in Jan-71.

G-BEEX De Havilland DH.106 Comet 4C nose section preserved at the North East Land Sea and Air Museum, Sunderland 22/8/21.
This aircraft was delivered new to United Arab Airlines as SU-ALM on 30th June 1961, this airline later became Egyptair.
It was bought to act as a spares source by Dan Air in 1977 and came back to the UK.
It became G-BEEX but was scrapped at Lasham soon after in 1977. The forward fuselage was saved for display. It still wears the colours of Egyptair.

According to photo sources I found, SU-AOU kept on flying in basic United Arab Airlines colours with EgyptAir titles until 1973 and was repainted in the new EgyptAir colours by 1974.

"The first of three Boeing 707-320Cs for United Arab Airlines (SU-AOU) made its delivery flight from Seattle to Cairo, via Heathrow Airport, London, on October 21. It enters service between Cairo and London tomorrow, November 1." (From Flight International. Vol. 94, 31 October 1968, as cited in en.wikipedia.org)

Information from airliners.net - thanks to Richard Vandervord:
Operated by UAA/Egyptair from new in 3.68 till 2.94, latterly as a freighter, this 707 went on to have several Zairean registrations: 9Q-CJM, CRA, CKG and CKB, lastly with Hewa Bora. Control was lost during a landing in a thunderstorm at Kinshasa on 26.4.02 - the aircraft was w/o after running off onto the grass shearing off engines and undercarriage.

In November 1971, United Arab Airlines started to use Il-62s instead of Comets on its regular Friday evening flight MS 775/776 from Cairo via Athens to Munich and back. SU-ARN was the first Il-62 to visit Riem (on 5 November 1971).

This Il-62 was delivered to Aeroflot ca. September 1970 as CCCP-86651 and leased to United Arab Airlines from June 1971 and then to EgyptAir from November 1971 (though it’s still wearing UAA titles here). It was damaged beyond repair on 16 June 1972 when it landed at Cairo-Almaza Air Base instead of Cairo International Airport and overran.

This IL-18 was also noted at Riem about a year later, on 1 February 1972, as SU-AOX with EgpytAir. It returned to the Soviet Union as CCCP-75430 in ca. 1973, was operated until 1985 and broken up by 1986.

Sister ship SU-AOY was also seen at Riem at least once, on 28 January 1969 (source: airborne - Das Magazin für Luftfahrtfreunde und Spotters).
