On the evening of June 3rd, 2025, a UP grain train headed to the Port derailed at Tower 26 in central Houston. The lead truck of a single grain hopper had jumped the tracks, but it stayed upright through a crossover and across a short bridge. About a half-mile from the original derailment site, the offending hopper tipped over and brought five other railcars with it.
A few days later, and after UP MOW crews worked around-the-clock to reopen this busy thoroughfare to Englewood Yard, the aftermath can be seen. The derailed cars had all been dragged out of the way, new track panels had been installed, and the whole area was covered with fresh ballast mixed in with spilled wheat berries.
The derailed cars included:
CMO 112516
CHTT 721616 (first car that derailed)
UP 100345
UP 111576
UP 93417
CHTT 721681
There is a live railfan camera situated at Tower 26, and it caught the derailment and its cleanup:
