Dali's Wonderland

The Toadstools of Grand
Staircase, just outside of Kanab, Utah is geological wonderland; one where not the forces of the Earth carved the landscape but Salvador Dali, himself, had a hand in crafting this bizarre symphony of stone.

Monumental

Spider Rock might be one of the most visually arresting landmarks in the entire National Park Service- a massive stone tower, shining in the sun and surrounded by the walls of an undulating and bending canyon. What a delight.

Much like Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly isn’t just part of the iconic landscape of the American Southwest, it is still a living and breathing and active community within the Navajo Nation- it is the only National Monument that is not on Federal Land, but instead, on Navajo Nation land. Spider Rock, a towering monolith of sandstone in the canyon is believed to be the home of Spider Grandmother, a spiritual figure who gives advice, medicinal cures, and help. Mindfulness of the privilege of being here is the way to go.

Across Utah and Arizona, you are in the Navajo Nation. In Navajo, sacred land is referred to as Diné Bikéyah. This land belongs to the people. Hopitutskwa, Pueblos, and Núu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute) land is also found across these two states and at archeological sites. It is an honor to see them.

Yosemite in Red

Zion is known as “Yosemite in red” and that’s never more apparent than in Kolob Canyons where the sharp spires of rock give way to alpine green, lit by glowing sun and sky.

In Zion, you are on Pueblos and Southern Paiute land. Zion’s native name is Mukuntuweap. Zion is the name given to the canyon by American explorers.

Living, Breathing, Monumental

Monument Valley isn’t just the iconic landscape of the American Southwest across history and pop culture, it is still a living and breathing and active community within the Navajo Nation- Tsé Bii’ Ndzisgaii, or Valley of Rocks.Traveling through this region is not akin to traveling through a National Park- you are often very close to homes and the patterns of everyday life in the Navajo Nation. Mindfulness of the privilege of being here is the way to go.

Finally!

I think I finally got a picture of these trees that I’m happy with.

I see them nearly every time I’m in The Everglades.

I take a picture every time.

The trees are partially obscured by the sawgrass from the road and they always face into or away from the sun. Nightmare.

This weekend was different.

Zion sparkles as the winter sun pushes through December clouds above Zion Canyon.

Heavenly by Rigsby'sUniquePhotography

Heavenly

Colorado sure has been giving me a warm welcome back. I'll be honest, there was a bit there where I wasn't sure if I want to live here anymore and change it up a bit. A lot of my friends had moved away, and it put me in a weird mental state.

But, ever since I've gotten back, its reminded me why I love it here so much and why its so magical. The last two nights at Red Rocks, was seriously two of the best nights I've had all year. Met some incredible new friends, and to top it off. Yesterday morning treated me to an absolutely stellar site over the Front Range as fog filled the valley floor below. It almost seemed like ocean waves brushing up against the mountains and could see the fog billowing in and out in real time.

A Basin opens Sunday, and 2ft of snow is in the forecast and I'm beyond ready to bust out the snowboard.

Joni Wrote Blue In Her House By The Sea…

John Mayer lyrics that fit perfectly and a long exposure that captures the motion of the sea spray, really well, if I’m going to toot my own horn about my photography. Really proud and happy with this shot. I love long exposures that capture motion and those lines of the water splashing make me very happy.

An Anniversary for the The Range of Light by Wexplorations

An Anniversary for the The Range of Light

Happy anniversary to one of my favorite places in the world. John Muir's "Range of Light", Yosemite, was set aside by the federal government, on this day in history, 133 years ago. This action predates the founding of the National Park Service and even Yellowstone's incorporation as the first National Park. Yosemite came before all of that, set aside under the care of California, for all to enjoy. For me, Yosemite is the place of quiet contemplation and spiritual grandeur that really threw my love of the National Parks into overdrive. It is the best example of what 'America's best idea' is and an inspiration to the world. Happy anniversary, friend. I’m so happy I got to revisit you this summer and I can’t wait to return, again and again.

“ This grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never all dried at once; a shower is forever falling; vapor ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal sunset, eternal dawn and gloaming, on seas and continents and islands, each in its turn, as the round earth rolls. “- John Muir

Happy Founder’s Day! by Wexplorations

Happy Founder’s Day!

A glittering and babbling stream, cutting its way through a perfectly green and lush meadow. An exacting wall of evergreens defining the horizon. A snow graced volcano reaching up to a glowing and spangled sky. Lassen is the perfect example of the picture book perfection and sublimity found in a National Park.

#NPS107 - Happy Founders Day! The Organic Act became law #onthisday in 1916 formally creating the National Park Service.

What to say about our favorite government agency on this, its 107th anniversary? The only thing to say, I suppose; that the National Park Service is perhaps our most noble endeavor. What we choose to save on our planet reveals what kind of species we are. Shall we save our tallest mountains? Our deepest canyons? Our oldest trees? Our waters and our skies and our lands and our history? Even our mistakes? Even the most ugly instances of where our culture has stumbled so that we may learn from them and improve? Yes. All that and more. In these uncertain times, when many are actively questioning the purpose and functionality of the National Park Service, may we always remember that what we choose to save about the land and our past is what we choose to save about ourselves. The National Parks are our best idea because they are OUR democratic spaces and they reflect OUR inclusivity and diversity.

May the NPS have its best days before it.

Happy 107th anniversary!

Obsessed. by Wexplorations

Obsessed.

Obsessed. I’m obsessed with editing the pictures from this moment of the trip; I’ve had these pictures open in Lightroom since I downloaded the RAW files to my desktop, I’ve created several different versions of this picture, and I’ve made composite images of the scene, trying to exactly replicate how beautiful the light streamed through the trees, how sharp the sequoia needles were against the bright sky, and the overall sublime mood of sunset in Round Meadow in early august. This was my probably the most beautiful moment of the entire trip. It was our first glorious day back in Sequoia and Kings Canyon. After a year of waiting to be back, the park glittered in all its splendor to welcome us back. How could I not be obsessed with this moment and want to capture it and preserve it? Especially when it looks like we stepped into a WPA poster? It was a perfect moment.
