It was fascinating to see the Sind river flowing into a large underground cavern

As we head back to Srinagar, after an interesting day in Sonmarg, Kashmir, India, we made several photo stops on the way to take in the fabulous Alpine scenery. Now after scores of pictures of snow capped mountains and frost and snow on the road and of the Sind (Sindhu) river fed by frozen glacial streams, here was something radically different. I found it totally fascinating to see the Sind (Sindh) river flowing into a large underground cavern and consequently disappearing from sight. I simply had to take a video and a few shots of this! Notes about Sonmarg and the Sind (Sindh) river which flows through it appear elsewhere in this album. (Sonmarg/ Sonamarg, Kashmir, India, Apr/ May 2024)

The Toyota Innova we took for our Sonmarg trip from Srinagar

As we head back to Srinagar, after an interesting day in Sonmarg, Kashmir, India, we made several photo stops on the way to take in the fabulous Alpine scenery. Whenever I hire a car for the day, I always like to take a couple of pictures of the vehicle, as well as of the driver and/ guide. Here I give my driver and guide a few second breather as I get off to take a picture of the Toyota Innova car, our ride for the trip that day from Srinagar to Sonmarg and back. View from the restaurant grounds where we stopped for lunch

As we head back to Srinagar, after an interesting day in Sonmarg, Kashmir, India, we made several photo stops on the way to take in the fabulous Alpine scenery. Love the snow on the mountain slope! Behind the green covered mountain in the foreground is another one totally covered in snow, barely visible due to the dull grey sky. Sonmarg could well be a skiing destination numero uno but that honour goes to Gulmarg which has better developed facilities and has better infrastructure to cater to tourists and skiing aficionados. There is a hotel located at the base of that mountain- Hotel Sheen- near which is also the parking lot where we give up our local jeep and get back to our car. Of course, Hotel Sheen has probably the only restaurant in Sonmarg so we stopped off here to have a quick lunch before taking our car and driving back to Srinagar. A closer view of the glacial stream the tourists are gawking at

As we head back to Srinagar, after an interesting day in Sonmarg, Kashmir, India, we made several photo stops on the way to take in the fabulous Alpine scenery. While I was finding it slightly cold and rather windy, despite being inside a car, I spotted this bunch of tourists checking out one of the many frozen glacial streams which feed the Sind (Sindh) river, which itself can be see in the foreground. This is a more tightly cropped picture than the one I had featured earlier (see previous pictures earlier in this album), so only the heads of the tourists are visible here. The Sind (Sindh) River is a river in the Ganderbal district of Kashmir, India. It is a major tributary of the Jhelum River and is 108 km long. A snowy mountains looms up ahead as we drive out of Sonmarg. Sonmarg becomes totally white with snow during the winter months. If once can see so much snow in the town even during spring (see previous photos in the album), just imagine what it w would be like during winter! As we head back to Srinagar, after an interesting day in Sonmarg, Kashmir, India, we made several photo stops on the way to take in the fabulous Alpine scenery. After witnessing all that snow and ice all over Sonmarg, it was refreshing to see a relatively snow free mountain in the town. Actually, I'm not sure if this picture is a bit out of sequence but one can see only a tiny frozen rivulet here and sadly several stumps of cut trees on the mountain slope. As we head back to Srinagar, after an interesting day in Sonmarg, Kashmir, India, we made several photo stops on the way to take in the fabulous Alpine scenery. But, as we exit Sonmarg, my guide and drive suggest I take a couple of selfies beside the beautiful girder bridge that marks the entrance to Sonmarg- we need to exit by the same bridge as well. (a picture of the bridge taken as we entered Sonmarg appeared earlier in this album as well). This view is taken just as we enter the bridge. The bridge is built and maintained by the Border Roads Organization (BRO) of the Indian Army. Notes about Sonmarg and the Sind (Sindh) river which flows through it appear elsewhere in this album. I was sad to leave Sonmarg but the car was pretty cosy in that cold weather. As we head back to Srinagar, after an interesting day in Sonmarg, Kashmir, India, we made several photo stops on the way to take in the fabulous Alpine scenery. But first, as we exit Sonmarg, we are approaching that beautiful girder bridge that marks the entrance to Sonmarg- we need to exit by the same bridge as well. The frozen glacial stream has stopped just short of the road

As we head back to Srinagar, after an interesting day in Sonmarg, Kashmir, India, we made several photo stops on the way to take in the fabulous Alpine scenery. Here, a frozen glacial stream has stopped just short of the road. Despite the scenic beauty however, the road can also be treacherous and downright dangerous. Barely days after my visit, a section of a glacier near Thajiwas Glacier collapsed- on 25 May 2024 to be exact- which resulted in two tourists falling into a snow cavity created by the break, Sadly, one of the died. Just a few days later, on 2 June 2024, a section of the Thajiwas Glacier itself collapsed, trapping three tourists whi were subsequently rescued, but sadly led to one fatality- a labourer working near the site. Notes about Sonmarg and the Sind (Sindh) river which flows through it appear elsewhere in this album. (Sonmarg/ Sonamarg, Kashmir, India, Apr/ May 2024)

Distant view of all those snow covered mountains as we head out towards Srinagar

As we make our way back from Sonmarg to Srinagar after a thrilling tryst with snow capped mountains, frost, snow and ice and the glacier fed Sind (Sindh) River, it's back to green mountains again. The snowy mountains are but a memory now, luckily they are still visible in the background. As we drove along, I looked down and spotted this pleasant little town nestled deep down in the valley. I couldn't make out the name of the town, but aren't those residents truly blessed to be living amidst such gorgeous Alpine scenery! I somehow thought the town in the valley had a sort of European feel to it- maybe due to the Alpine setting, type of cottages in the town and the steeply sloping roofs! I look all puffed up here due to the icy winds blowing through my jacket

As we head back to Srinagar, after an interesting day in Sonmarg, Kashmir, India, we made several photo stops on the way to take in the fabulous Alpine scenery. I was pretty cold and windy, and it was even drizzling slightly, due to which although our car stopped, I was taking pictures mostly out of the car window. At one point, my guide had me get off and pose next to the Sind (Sindhu) river. My rather puffed up look is due to the cold winds blowing through my jacket- despite the beautiful scenery and soothing bubbling of the river, boy was I glad to get back into the car! As we were moving ahead on our way out of Sonmarg, the road was going alongside the Sind (Sindh) river for some distance. As we head back to Srinagar, after an interesting day in Sonmarg, Kashmir, India, we made several photo stops on the way to take in the fabulous Alpine scenery. Here is a selfie of me against a frozen glacial stream which feeds the Sind (or Sindh) river. It was pretty cold and windy and it was beginning to drizzle slightly but I couldn't for the life of me miss taking a selfie amidst all that frost and snow. The Sind (Sindh) river in the Ganderbal district of Kashmir, India, is a major tributary of the Jhelum River and is 108 km in length. The source of this river lies in the Machoi Glacier at an elevation of 4,800 mtr east of the Amarnath cave temple and south of the Zoji La. As we head back to Srinagar, after an interesting day in Sonmarg, Kashmir, India, we made several photo stops on the way to take in the fabulous Alpine scenery. This is a far view of Thajiwas Glacier with a frozen glacial stream flowing down from it. Now how fascinating is that! Had we taken a pony ride in Sonmarg, we could have gone slightly closer to that glacier but thank goodness for the zoom function on the iPhone! Thajiwas glacier lies at an altitude of 9,186 ft and offers a stunning view against emerald meadows and a clear blue sky during summer. (it was not summer at the time of my visit- it was in fact cloudy and drizzling heavily even in spring- the time of my visit). During the summer months, one can take a half-day hike to numerous waterfalls around this glacier.
