From Church Life (1915):
On Wednesday, the 22nd ult., Miss
Elizabeth Veals, for twenty- five years
principal of Glen Mawr School, Toronto,
died at her home in Spadina avenue.
During that period she trained a great
many women who are now occupying
high positions in society and are wielding
a strong, beneficent influence.
Miss Veals, who was a thorough gentle-
woman, came to Canada as governess to
Lord Dufferin’s children, among them be-
ing Lady Helen Fergusson, who takes a
prominent place in political society and
in educational work in England and Scot-
land. At the close of Lord Dufferin’s
term of office as Governor-General of
Canada, Miss Veals set up a school for
girls in Peterborough, where she remained
for some ten years. In 1887, on the re-
tirement of Mrs. Nixon, who died only a
few months ago at a good old age, Miss
Veals succeeded her in Peter street, at
first requiring only one house but soon
adding a second. As a result of the up-
town movement she, after some eight
years, acquired the house and grounds of
Mr. W. J. McMaster in Spadina avenue,
where the school is still carried on by Miss
Stuart.
Thorough herself, Miss Veals insisted
on thoroughness in her staff and in her
pupils. The former was composed more
and more of graduates of universities as
time wore on and the latter were encour-
aged to make matriculation their goal.
Parents came to understand that Miss
Veals was mistress in her own house and
they ceased to ask for special arrange-
ments for their daughters. With whims
and fancies she had no patience, and she
believed strongly in the perf orman e of
duty. In the earlier days she and her
girls who were Anglicans attended St.
James’ Cathedral, but, after removal to
Spadina avenue, they went to St, Ste-
phen’s.
On Miss Veals’ retirement from the
principalship her "old girls” presented her
with a life annuity, some of her invest-
ments having turned out unfortunately.
Since the war they have been banded to-
gether as the Glen Mawr Association to
help provide supplies and comforts for
the soldiers.
