Icelandic horses are known for their robustness. Most of the animals in Iceland are kept outdoors all year round and develop a very thick winter coat in winter. In summer, many of the approximately 80,000 horses (as well as sheep) are allowed to run free in the mountains so that they can graze in the lush vegetation of the highlands. Surprisingly, there are actually around 100 wild horses in Iceland, which are of course feral domestic horses.
Icelandic horses have a very friendly, good-natured and curious character - a legacy from the Viking Age, when they were the focus of clan life. To illustrate how important their horses are to Icelanders: each animal receives its own Kennitala (social security number). The first settlers brought their horses to Iceland just over 1,000 years ago. Today's Icelandic horse is the result of centuries of selective breeding. In order to maintain the purebred status, no horses are allowed to be imported into Iceland.
