The line follows a different river for a while called "Broken River" which is near Broken Hill. Fortunately the railroad was built strongly as a loaded 30-wagon coal train from the West Coast to Christchurch can carry up to 1,460 tonnes of coal. In 2003 just over 2 million tons of coal came this way. However coal mining is reducing now as we worry about the climate. Coffee and biscuits were delivered to our seats somewhere here-abouts.
Completed in 1863, Neidpath Viaduct is a striking 8-arch railway bridge that once carried the Symington, Biggar and Broughton Railway westward from Peebles across the River Tweed. Built to an elegant skewed design by the engineer Thomas Bouch - better known (and later, tragically, infamous) for the Tay Bridge - the viaduct showcases both Victorian ambition and engineering finesse.
Though the tracks have long since vanished and trains no longer run this way, the viaduct remains a quietly commanding presence in the landscape. Its graceful arches and weathered stone seem to grow out of the riverbanks, perfectly framed by the rolling hills beyond.
Today it carries only memories and the occasional walker or cyclist on the Tweed Valley Railway Path, but the echo of industry and the hush of history linger in the air.

From the left: Pen y Ghent (distant, a lion couchant), Ingleborough (central, the rightmost of the three), Whernside. The Ribblehead Viaduct is prominent, between Ingleborough and Whernside. The viewpoint is near Runscar Caves; Batty Moss, the site of a shanty town during the construction of the viaduct in the 1870s, lies between the camera and Ingleborough.
