Indian Stepwell

Chand Baori, in the village of Abhaneri near Bandikui, Rajasthan is one of the deepest and largest stepwells in India. Stepwells such as these have been used for centuries especially in the more arid areas of India to ensure a supply of water during the long dry season. At the bottom there remains a constant pool of water even today. The village women would form a bucket brigade each morning to bring up water for use in their households. Across the well are apartments where visiting dignitaries could stay because it would be much cooler down in the well. The top of the well was enclosed within a Hindu temple. The use of stepwells in India date back to the 2nd century. They are no longer used due to a lack of controlled hygiene which can therefore spread microbes and disease.

Circular fruitfulness in the Sahara

The circular irrigation (centre pivot) with extracted fossil groundwater (Nubian sandstone aquifer) draws striking geometric patterns in the landscape here in the southern part of Egypt's Western Desert near the border with Sudan. The colouring and structure of the circles, which are around 800 metres in diameter, provide information about the plants grown and their degree of ripeness.

Water spring

Please view large (press L)

Such a great experience to visit Zelenci, a natural water spring in the middle of the Julian Alps. The turquoise water with the green vegetation and trees around the little lake makes this a serene place to visit. But, you have to be very early or late, because during the day it is hugely crowded. Coincidentally, the nature reserve was just 1km away from our apartment, so it was less painful to visit early in the morning. Don't forget to visit this place if you are around Kranjska Gora.

Many thanks for any comments or favs, highly appreciated and don't forget to visit my Instagram with also drone video footage of the magical place (@thijs.fotografie)

Tour de l'Orle d'Or, Semur-en-Auxois, Côte d'Or, Franche-Comté, Bourgogne, France by claude lina

Tour de l'Orle d'Or, Semur-en-Auxois, Côte d'Or, Franche-Comté, Bourgogne, France

Built at the end of the 13th century, the Semur keep is made up of a set of 4 massive towers, joined by high walls that have disappeared, the curtain walls, intended to close access to the space located inside the Armançon meander.
A fortress belonging to the Dukes of Burgundy, the Semur keep was, in the Middle Ages, a virtually impregnable stronghold.
The main tower of the Semur keep, the Lourdeault tower (the Orle d'Or surname is more recent), is an essential element of the defense, control and representation system of ducal power in its flagship city in the bailiwick of Auxois. Its imposing dimensions, nearly 55 m high (including 44 m of masonry) and 15 m in external diameter, the Orle d'Or tower was, through its function as a city gate, the centerpiece of this fortified complex.
Indeed, before the construction of the Joly bridge in 1784, access to the fortified upper town (Notre Dame town) was via a narrow paved passage, bordered by two sidewalks still visible on the lower level of the tower as an extension of the rue des Vaux. The carts could then be easily controlled, first from the outside from a defensive level with large arrow slits, then from above, thanks to a dominant floor (the ‘Société des Sciences’ has restored the jetty on which the sentries stood), a portcullis and strong iron-clad door leaves, before entering the town via another defended gate leading into the lower part of the current rue du Renaudot.
Note that the large stone embankment added to the lower part of the tower is probably contemporary with the closing of the gate and the work following the construction of the Joly bridge, and the paved roadway (rues du Pont Joly then Voltaire).
This tower has a space divided into six large superimposed volumes, a remarkable example of medieval military architecture.
