An 18-window arcade was an announcement to the Iowans of 1966 that the U.S. commercial banking industry continued to exist. by Tim Kiser

An 18-window arcade was an announcement to the Iowans of 1966 that the U.S. commercial banking industry continued to exist.

In downtown Ottumwa, Iowa, on October 27th, 2020, was a Wells Fargo bank branch at the northeast corner of West 2nd Street and South Marion Street.

The building was built in 1966 and was formerly a Norwest Bank branch. Based on its design (with a drive-through), I am confident the building has always been a bank branch, but I do not know what the bank's name was in 1966.

In Iowa, triangular notches in concrete blocks were arranged to express a lozenge pattern. by Tim Kiser

In Iowa, triangular notches in concrete blocks were arranged to express a lozenge pattern.

Next, the concrete blocks were painted, again and again and again, over the course of several decades.

The building is from 1948, but these concrete blocks were probably added later, right? Like sometime between the late 1950s and the early 1970s, right?

Blue glass 1987: the 2nd-highest skyscraper in all Winston-Salem. by Tim Kiser

Blue glass 1987: the 2nd-highest skyscraper in all Winston-Salem.

The former BB&T Financial Center soars 340 feet (100 m) into outer space, and is unlikely ever again to be fully occupied with tenants. The endeavor was a regrettable waste of resources that has led us nowhere good. This should not have been built.

Here was a "Forsyth County Hall of Justice" from 1975, seen here aged 48 yrs. by Tim Kiser

© Tim Kiser, all rights reserved.

Here was a "Forsyth County Hall of Justice" from 1975, seen here aged 48 yrs.

Here we have "pre-cast concrete panels with an irregular fenestration pattern" joined with a windowless wall of "blond brick veneer," according to the building's entry in the federal documentation of the Downtown Winston-Salem Historic District.

In my opinion "blond" suggests a yellower color than this. I prefer to describe the brick veneer as "light brown."

To call this a "hall of justice" is to assert that perfection has been achieved in the administration of justice therein. The name is loaded with preemptive defiance of earnest public questioning as to whether a given outcome represents actual justice; and mocks the victims of miscarriages of justice that have occurred there. It would be better (i.e., more humble) to call it a "courthouse."

The TALLEST SKYSCRAPER IN DAVENPORT is from 1928 and is also possibly the UNGAINLIEST SKYSCRAPER IN IOWA. by Tim Kiser

The TALLEST SKYSCRAPER IN DAVENPORT is from 1928 and is also possibly the UNGAINLIEST SKYSCRAPER IN IOWA.

In a real estate listing from 2017, I found a funny picture of the building with a Wells Fargo sign on it.

Most online sources say the building is from 1927. The official documentation of the Davenport Downtown Commercial Historic District from 2019 says it's from 1928, and I found a post in a local history enthusiasts' chatgroup on Facebook that says it "was ready for occupancy on June 1, 1928..."

I have DECIDED TO BELIEVE it's from 1928.

Speaking of local history enthusiasts' chatgroups on Facebook: If these local history enthusiasts wanna retain access to their pictures and documents and discussions for many many years into the future, they need to duplicate it all and put it somewhere that isn't Facebook. Facebook could decide to shut down at any moment! It's not a reliable home for literally anything! Sheesh!, my gosh!

Relative to the other sides of the building, this side (the south side) has much less neoclassical ornamentation, but it's still too much. The tower has a clock which I have intentionally hidden from you.

EV Charging Stations On Electric Drive, Austin, Texas by myoldpostcards

EV Charging Stations On Electric Drive, Austin, Texas

A view of charging stations on Electric Drive, a portion of West 2nd Street, between Walter Seaholm Drive and Sandra Muraida Way, that is Austin Energy's showcase for electric transportation in Austin’s new Seaholm EcoDistrict.

Electric Drive is a mobility hub that features bike sharing, car sharing, access to the hike-and-bike trail, and charging options for two- and four wheel electric vehicles (EVs). It is a key component of Austin Energy's Plug-In EVerywhere network and demonstrates Austin as a Smart City leader in electric transportation. Plug-In EVerywhere allows EV drivers to charge at 1000+ charging ports throughout Austin for only $4.17 a month.

Straight ahead is the iconic City of Austin Power Plant sign outside the Seaholm Power Plant, a historic former power station located on the north shore of Lady Bird Lake in Downtown Austin. Opened in 1951, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.

The plant remained an active part of the city’s power generation system until 1989. Re-development of the plant began in 2013. The interior of the turbine generator building was converted to a mixture of office, retail and restaurant space, with tenants occupying the facility beginning in 2015.

In 2021 we think back to 2004, on the occasion of a visit to a parking garage in Jamestown, New York. by Tim Kiser

In 2021 we think back to 2004, on the occasion of a visit to a parking garage in Jamestown, New York.

"It was yet another horrible year!"

It is weird to see five parking meters so close together!!

According to the City of Jamestown "Online Assessment Roll System," the parking ramp was actually finished in 2005. That's how datestones work: The construction is jinxed from the start by premature memorialization of the year the project is begun. It is a stupid way of doing things!

Ruined sign of local newspaper.

If the missing letter were in their possession they'd probably hang it back up but I bet they don't have it.

Glazed green bricks from the 1970s, at a former Sears store from 1949. by Tim Kiser

Glazed green bricks from the 1970s, at a former Sears store from 1949.

I was all excited to see glazed bricks from the late 1940s, but this book says they were added in the 1970s, along with the Cor-Ten steel beams — the runoff from which is causing damage to the glazed bricks!!
