Levi Hawley Hoeing Potatoes by Cloyne & District Historical Society

Levi Hawley Hoeing Potatoes

Levi Hawley was born May 10, 1895, on what was later known as Harvey Brook's farm on the Old Harlowe Road (now Wintergreen Road). When Levi was young the family used a team of horses and moved the house to its present location. They later decided to enlarge the house, so they hauled the front part of the house from nearby Star Lake, again with a team of horses and joined the two sections into one house. Levi had two brothers and a sister who passed away.

Levi married Effa Robinson in Kingston on September 26, 1923. They had four children - Earl, Vera, Shirley and Joyce. Shirley passed away from pneumonia in childhood.

Levi was mainly a farmer. He was drafted in WWI but did not go overseas. He worked for Hydro when they were putting the hydro tower lines through in 1934-35. He also helped build houses and did lots of odd jobs. He was a very active man, always working in the garden as in the photo where he was hoeing potatoes, or travelling on his bicycle, right into his 90s. He was a reserved man but when you got his talking you found he had many interests and accomplishments.

Levi lived in the family home all his life; in later years with his daughter Vera and her husband Leo Raymo. He died in 1995 in his 100th year. He is buried in Dempsey Cemetery with his parents.

Thanks to Eileen Flieler who gathered this information and the photo from Kim Reavie, the wife of Levi's grandson Ronald Raymo and others in the Hawley family.

This story and photo appeared in the 2017 CDHS Calendar.

Vankoughnet, Cannon and Tom Neal - 1976 by Cloyne & District Historical Society

Vankoughnet, Cannon and Tom Neal - 1976

Tom Neal was born in Kingston on September 11, 1913 the eldest of Martin and Nellie Neal. He moved to the Harlowe area with his parents when he was very young and grew up on the Old Harlowe Road (now Wintergreen Road) near Neal's Lake. He received his elementary education at Pipe's School near his home. Over the years, 10 more children were added to the family - seven girls and three boys.

As a young man he worked at various jobs, one being selling sewing machines. He later worked at Ajax Ontario at an ammunition plant making powder for shells. During WWII he joined the RCAF and was stationed at St. Emile, Quebec before going overseas to Yorkshire England in the Medical Corps.

After returning home he 'cornered' the market for 50 years with stores at the main (only) intersection in Harlowe. The first was a used furniture store on the north east corner. In 1952 he bought the general store on the north west corner from Hugh and Jean Hillier and ran it until 1962 when he sold it to John and Joan Flieler. Five years later he started another general store back on the northeast corner. He operated it until 1985, eventually closing it and buying back the previous store, now significantly expanded from John and Joan. He ran it until his death at 87 in 2001. Cottagers and tourists on nearby Big Gull and Kashwakamak lakes became used to buying everything needed for their camps, right down to their olives at Tom's stores.

Tom was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 328 Northbrook. He was one of the longest serving members on the Council of Barrie Township. He served for over 30 years and was Reeve for 28 years in 1953-54, 1961-64, from 1968-88 and finally 1992-97. In 1972 he served as Warden of Frontenac County. He was the last municipal officer to wear the Chain of Office for the Barrie Township before the municipality amalgamated in January 1998 to the Township of North Frontenac.

In January 2016 Reeve Neal's dedication and hard work within the township and the county was recognized. A framed picture and certificate honouring Tom was dedicated and hung in the Harlowe Community Hall, a testament to the contributions he made in making the community what it is today.

Thanks to Eileen Flieler for received information from Darlene Parks, Tommy Neal Jr., and others in the Neal Family. The photo is from the CDHS Album. Thanks also to the Frontenac News for the writeup about the dedication.

Photo and story were featured in the 2017 CDHS Calendar.

Ada Levere (1909-1997) by Cloyne & District Historical Society

Ada Levere (1909-1997)

Ada Cummings Levere grew up on a small farm at Bishop's Corners near Highway 41 on what is called Wintergreen Road. Her father and mother, Edward and Annie (Bishop) as well as Ada, had 6 other children: Frieda, Ida, Myrtle, Elsie, Edmond and Merton.

Ada was born 8 November 1909. The family had also become a surrogate family for Mary Hoffman around 1918 when Mary lost her family. Ada married Percy Levere on May 1st, 1926. Percy worked at many jobs in the area most notably with the Department of Highways.

On their farm at Bishop's Corners, Ada and Percy had 5 children. Laura, Allen, June, Joyce and Doral. Around 1935 the family moved to a log house located about 2 km north of Cloyne on Highway 41. They proceeded to have 2 more children, Laurence and Lenora. Percy passed away September 4th, 1960.

Outside of raising children, Ada spent her working day at Camp Mazinaw, Sawyer Stoll Lumber Company, Shaw's Restaurant in Kaladar and a long spell at Northwestern Hospital in Toronto. Upon her retirement from the hospital, Ada returned to Cloyne to a new house south of Cloyne, since the log homestead had been demolished due to highway expansion.

She eventually moved to Pine Meadow Nursing Home and died December 28th, 1997. Her legacy remains with 19 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 4 great, great grandchildren.
