Bridget Bishop was the first of the initial three victims of the Salem Witch Trials. Fourteen women and five men were executed by hanging, five more people died awaiting trial, and Giles Corey was crushed to death by pressing for refusing to enter a plea. In 1992 a memorial was opened in Salem town, with a bench for each one of the twenty who were executed.
