Long Distance Voyager 221138 passes from Somerst into Wiltshire as it approaches Masters crossing with (diverted due to flooding on the Somerset Levels) XC service 1S45 09.23 Exeter St Davids to Aberdeen, I wonder how many of the passengers are on board for the entire (nearly) 12 hour trip.

Aberdeen is Scotland's third largest city by population, it is known as the Granite city which is coincidental as that is the same material used for the seating on XC Voyager units.

A composite image of the Cornish coastal town of Penzance. Getting under way at the start of its 640-plus mile trip to the Scottish capital, Cross Country Voyager unit 221138 is seen leaving Penzance with 1S47, the 08:37 departure from Penzance to Edinburgh.

In the background, a couple of GWR class 802 units can be seen in the station under the train shed at the terminus. The station roof and stone buildings date from the rebuild of 1879-80 which saw the original smaller wooden structures replaced. These dated from the arrival of the broad gauge West Cornwall Railway which reached here in 1852. The GWR subsequently took over operation of the company and installed mixed gauge rails in 1866 until the abolition of the broad gauge in 1892. The platforms were rebuilt and the site expanded in 1937 using land reclaimed from the sea. At the same time a new signal box was provided to control the new layout. Built on the site of a previous small engine shed, it can be seen above the middle of the train. Although the semaphore signals under its control were replaced by colour lights in 1981, it still retains its lever frame.

The tower of St Mary's church and the domed roof and octagonal lantern of the Market House building dominate the skyline over the town. The church was constructed in 1835 and the Market House was opened in 1838 by the Corporation of Penzance as the site of the Market and Guildhall.

To the left of the frame, moored up next to the 1855-built lighthouse on the South Pier is the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company Scillonian III ferry. Constructed in 1977, it provides a seasonal link to St Mary's on the Isles of Scilly.

Just visible on the distant headland of Penlee Point are the red doors of the former Penlee lifeboat station. It was from that slipway on the fateful night of 19th December 1981 that the Watson-class lifeboat Solomon Browne launched in hurricane force 12 conditions to help the stricken ship MV Union Star adrift near Wolf Rock. Both were lost with the loss of eight persons on each vessel. The building is now listed and maintained as a memorial as subsequent larger all-weather lifeboats utilise a mooring in Newlyn harbour.
