This peaceful path was once a masugata-style koguchi—a square defensive gate at the heart of a Japanese castle’s fortifications.
Centuries later, it rests under trees and moss, a quiet corner of a castle ruin reclaimed by nature.
Time has turned this once-guarded space into a sanctuary.

We ended up sharing a table (aiseki), and without warning, I pointed my camera at this unsuspecting salaryman. In the first shot, he simply turned his gaze—clueless. Then came the golden moment: photo two. Eyebrows up, mouth slightly open, a perfect freeze-frame of pure surprise. Not only did I catch him off guard, I caught his reaction to being caught off guard! That’s a double win. By the third shot, he’s giving a shy smile, realizing he’s now in the middle of a silent, one-sided photoshoot.
Hey, Mr. Salaryman—your double-take? Absolute comedy gold.
There he was — arms folded, perfectly still in midwater, hovering like it was the most natural thing in the world.
No need to pose. Just that quiet, unshakable presence — like a big brother who’s always got your back, even 20 meters deep.
A calm silhouette, suspended in the blue — the kind of diver who makes the ocean feel safe.
Now that’s how you display cool.
