Serena - stranger 445 by englishreader

Serena - stranger 445

I met Serena at the Sneinton Market Avenues. Serena was sitting in the open area enjoying a drink. I went over and introduced my stranger project to her and Serena said yes to being photographed straightaway. I asked if I could sit on the opposite side of the bench table so I’d be able to photographer her at eye-level rather than looking down on her. The overcast sky produced some soft even light that was easy to work with.

Serena told me that she is from Chesterfield but now lives in Nottingham. Serena works for Mars at a pet care research site which is aimed at cats and dogs.

When not working, Serena likes to draw and most of her work at the moment is self-portraiture as she’s developing her skills at drawing people. Serena also goes to a lot of heavy metal gigs and festivals.

The single word Serena would use to describe herself is brash.

Serena’s guilty pleasure is Abba.

Serena told me she can’t live without her three cats.

If I could grant Serena a wish it would be to go back to being 18 so she could do things differently.

Thank-you Serena for allowing me to interrupt your day and photograph you for my stranger project. I hope you like your portrait.

Hazel - stranger 446 by englishreader

Hazel - stranger 446

When I saw Hazel’s hair colour I just had to go and ask if she’d agree to being photographed for my stranger project as a few feet away from where I met her there was a wall decorated in pink graffiti which I thought would make a perfect background for her.

Hazel is originally from Southampton but had come to live in Nottingham in 2013. She was in the city to help her friend run the 2025 Tattoo Convention – I seem to remember Hazel saying it was the first time a tattoo convention had been held in Nottingham for ten years.

Hazel’s weekly job is working in a care home for the elderly.

Hazel told me her hobby is cars. Classic Japanese cares in particular. She then laughed and said, “even though I drive a French car.”

Hazel also likes going to gigs and attends a lot of DIY hardcore shows.

The single word Hazel would use to describe herself is understanding.

Hazel’s guilty pleasure is anima.

If I could grant Hazel a wish it would be for a Toyota Supra MK4.

Thank-you Hazel for saying yes to being photographed for my stranger project. I hope you like your portrait.

Ophelia - stranger 444 by englishreader

Ophelia - stranger 444

I met Ophelia and her partner Aidan (see my previous stranger) as they left the 2025 Tattoo Convention in Nottingham. They’d come from Grimsby to visit the convention.

One of the buildings’ pillars and walls provided a suitable backdrop for Ophelia. The overcast daylight provided soft illumination so taking photographs of Ophelia couldn’t have been easier.

Ophelia works as a bartender and also as an influencer in the world of goth and rock fashion.

In her spare time Ophelia enjoys writing autobiographies and fantasy fiction.

The single word Ophelia would use to describe herself is chaotic. Aiden said the word he would use to describe Ophelia would be fashionable.

Ophelia told me her guilty pleasure was Hello Kitty.

If I could grant Ophelia a wish it would be to live her life without having to worry about money.

I asked Ophelia if she had a message for the people of the world and she said to be yourself.

Thank-you Ophelia for saying yes to being photographed for my stranger project. I hope you like your photograph.

Lydia - stranger 441

Lydia is from Brighton but is now living in Nottingham as she is at university here studying psychology and was just about to complete her second year of four when I met her. The day after I photographed her, Lydia would be taking her first exam.

Lydia was great fun to photograph which is why I chose this image of her for my stranger project. I don’t remember what was said but it sure tickled her funny bone.

In her spare time Lydia does yoga, likes going for walks in nature, and drawing a wide variety of subjects.

The one-word Lydia would use to describe herself is smiley.

Lydia’s guilty pleasure is listening to Abba.

If I could grant Lydia a wish it would be for a round the world ticket.

Thank-you Lydia for being great fun to talk to and photograph, I hope you like your portrait.

Valentina - stranger 442 by englishreader

Valentina - stranger 442

Valentina’s bright red top made her stand out from the crowd as she walked towards me in Nottingham so I stepped forwards and introduced my stranger project to her. As it happened, we had met on the shaded side of the street so that was where I photographed her.

Valentina was born in Argentina but lives in Valencia, Spain. When I met her, she was travelling and England was just one of her stops. Back home, Valentina works in a restaurant.

Valentina told me two of her hobbies were going to concerts and visiting museums.

The one-word that Valentina would use to describe herself is happy.

Valentina’s biggest strength is empathy. She then said that she likes to try and solve other people’s problems.

If I could grant Valentina a wish it would be to bring her aunt to Spain from Argentina.

Thank-you Valentina for letting me interrupt your day and for saying yes to me photographing you for my project. I hope you like your portrait.

Rose - stranger 439 by englishreader

Rose - stranger 439

I met Rose, along with her cousin Laurel (see my previous stranger), in Nottingham. Both of them were celebrating Rose finishing her three-year university course in sociology. Rose said she’d like to get a job where she would be helping people perhaps as a social worker but Rose’s immediate plans were to go travelling with Thailand, Bali, Vietnam and Malaysia being the places she most wanted to visit.

Rose told me her hobbies included fitness; going to the gym, swimming and running. Rose also enjoys reading crime fiction.

I asked Rose to describe herself in one word and she said outgoing. The word Laurel used to describe Rose was funny.

Rose said her guilty pleasure was listening to One Direction.

If I could grant Rose a wish, what would it be for? “To be happy,” she said.

Thank-you Rose for saying yes to being photographed for my stranger project. I hope you like your portrait.

Laurel - stranger 438

I met Laurel in Nottingham whilst she was visiting her cousin Rose (see my next stranger) to celebrate Rose finishing university. Laurel is from London.

I photographed Laurel where I met her as we were in the shade which kept her out of the harsh sunlight of the day. I just asked Laurel to lean against a brick wall and moments later I had a picture we both liked.

Laurel told me she is a musician and producer of music. Laurel also sings and her preferred genre is alternative.

Laurel’s hobbies include reading non-fiction so she can widen her knowledge in a variety of subjects. Currently she is reading about anarchism. Laurel said another of her hobbies is smoking weed.

The one-word Laurel would use to describe herself is chilled. I asked Rose what word she’d choose to describe Laurel and she said eccentric.

Laurel said her guilty pleasure is watching high school dramas on Netflix.

If I could grant Laurel a wish it would be to stop all wars.

Thank-you Laurel for saying yes to being photographed for my stranger project. I hope you like your portrait.

Slackline - 4129

At Coon Bluff this young lady was practicing on her slackline. Amazing to watch her balance on webbing loosely tied to trees. I was impressed.

Here is a slackline starter kit if you're interested. Found using AI. No affiliation. Buyer beware. I just was curious how much it would cost to purchase the equipment.

Dani - stranger 436 by englishreader

Dani - stranger 436

I saw Dani sitting with her friend, Thomas (see my next stranger), at the 2025 Beltane Pagan Market held in Nottingham’s Sneinton Market avenues and was struck by her blue hair. Knowing that one of the shops on another avenue had similar coloured window frames I thought it would make a great background for Dani. Going over I quickly introduced my stranger project to Dani and Thomas and both agreed to be photographed for it.

A short walk brought us to my chosen setting for my photograph of Dani. After a little direction I got her positioned between the blue uprights so that her hair didn’t break into either of them and moments later I had the image I’d envisioned.

Dani is from London but had come to Nottingham to attend university where she is doing the second year of a three-year course in child nursing. Dani told me she’d like to get a job in a neonatal unit in Nottingham.

When not studying, Dani likes to read dystopian books and also enjoys doing colouring books.

The one-word Dani would use to describe herself is weird.

Dani’s guilty pleasure is spicy foods.

If I could grant Dani a wish it would be to become a Na’vi – a humanoid species from the movie Avatar as she likes their blue skin.

Thank-you Dani for saying yes to being photographed for my stranger project. I hope you like your portrait.

Willow - stranger 435 by englishreader

Willow - stranger 435

I met Willow and her mother Anwen (see my previous stranger) at the 2025 Beltane Pagan Market held in Nottingham’s Sneinton Market Avenues. Willow was helping her mother run their stall Airy Fairy. They are from Sheffield and Anwen has a shop there of the same name. You can find out more by following this link: airyfairy.org/

I photographed Willow a little further into the stall than her mother and was slightly concerned that the bright sunlight coming through the gazebo’s walls and roof would give Willow’s skin a green cast. I needn’t have worried though, as this didn’t happen.

Whenever she could Willow had been going out to look at other stalls and told me she had had some fantastic pancakes.

Willow is a student studying drama, music, and textiles. Willows hopes to create a career for herself in theatre. Willow said she is very arty and also enjoys singing songs from 1980’s musicals.

The one-word Willow would use to describe herself is weird.

Willow’s guilty pleasure is playing Roblox as her friends say she is too old to play this game now.

If I could grant Willow a wish it would be to meet her favourite actor, David Tennant.

Thank-you Willow for saying yes to being photographed for my stranger project. I hope you like your portrait.
