Outer half of the Sakurada Gate.
Just in front of this gate, Ii Naosuke, Chief Minister (Tairō) of the Tokugawa shogunate, was assassinated on 24 March 1860 by rōnin samurai of the Mito and Satsuma Domains. Ii had signed trade treaties with the USA and other nations in defiance of the Emperor's instructions.
8 of the 60 samurai escorting Ii were killed/died of their wounds, the surviving but badly wounded were exiled with reduced stipends, the slightly wounded were ordered to suicide by Seppuku, and all the unharmed were beheaded, with their samurai status revoked.
