Grey herons can always be seen wading around rice fields in Japan. So this is definitely no rare wildlife spotting. Mediocre to say the least I know, but I guess that's the point I'm trying to make. That shooting wild animals must be one of the most challenging genres to document.
You'd only have to flick through your latest copy of Nat Geo to know that the good shots must have elements of all the other specialisations in photography. It's got the patience and precision required to capture landscapes. The spontaneity and reflexes needed in sports (including the crazy telephoto lenses that each cost more than a hybrid car). The ability to tell the story and drama needed in journalism and travel (not to mention the added element of danger). And of course the flare and flexibility required to shoot fashion/commercial, wedding and family portraits. I know that's an oversimplification, and I'm certainly not saying that the others are a piece of cake. Just a bystander's take on it all.
Anyway the word for heron is, sagi (サギ), in Japanese which is also a homophone of another word which means, fraud (詐欺). I think this cheeky bird is indirectly trying to tell me not to quit my day job.
