St Mary's station was opened on 3 March 1884 by the South Eastern Railway (SER).
It was originally used as a terminus for trains coming from Addiscombe via the East London Railway (ELR).
The station remained a terminus until the line from the Aldgate/Minories junctions to Whitechapel station was opened jointly by the Metropolitan District Railway (MDR) and the Metropolitan Railway (MET) on 6 October 1884.
The station was renamed to St Mary's (Whitechapel Road) on 26 January 1923.
The station was closed on 1 May 1938, a few months ahead of the newly relocated Aldgate East station which opened on 30 October 1938.
