Temple Burn 2024

Temple Burn 2024

I saw this photograph in my mind almost immediately early in the week and luckily the resulting image is exactly what I wanted it to look like! What I didn't factor in was that crazy dust storm during the temple burn. From this extreme distance with a long lens (between the ashes of man and center camp) I could barely tell they had actually started the burn on time and the dust was already blowing like crazy. I was standing there with all my gear getting absolutely hammered by the wind and people rushing past me. Everyone was in a rush. I had all my lights on facing all directions so people wouldn't run me over. Burners late to the burn in all forms of vehicles were passing me and going around me. It was pure chaos. I was getting destroyed in the dust and thinking I'm not going to get the shot. Then I could see an opening in the dust that was a different color of orange blowing across. Holy crap there is a gap. It's happening! Then I had about 4 seconds as a gap in the dust moved across the burn. I banged off as many frames as I could and that was it for my temple burn. I turned around and went back to camp knowing all too well how chaotic it would be out there. I didn't get to be part of the temple burn experience or really be part of it at all so you (and my friends who built this gorgeous temple) could have this picture. Sometimes I don't know if it's worth it to give up my entire burn each year to make photos for you all. But then I remember this is what I can do to contribute, and this community thrives when everyone does what they do best. Which is why I go back every year and will for as long as I'm fortunate enough to do so.

The End of Time by Andrea Greenlees and Andy Tibbetts from London, UK and Reno, NV

The End of Time is a dying clock, in fact it is a murdered clock. As a consequence, Time has stopped and now it will forever be Teatime. This artwork illustrates the death of one clock, which results in the death of all clocks and therefore Time itself. It does so in a whimsical manner designed to disturb but entertain at the same time. This 22-foot tall, climbable, surreal, collapsing clock has been pierced by a gigantic sword, its mechanism is broken and exposed, its numerals and hands distorted, and it has a giant Teacup and Saucer perched precariously at the top. The Teacup can accommodate 6 people at a time sitting on a circular bench in a surprisingly intimate setting. A huge, mysterious key hangs inside the clock but what is it for?
