It is the realisation of, and firm adherence to, that which is ever existent that deserves the name siddhi or attainment. Attainment of miraculous powers, is like attaining them in dreams. When he wakes up what becomes of them? Will those who have brushed aside the unreal and got established in the Real be confounded by these?

If the mind becomes absorbed in the Heart, the ego or ‘1’, which is the centre of the multitude of thoughts, finally vanishes and pure Consciousness or Self, which subsists during all the states of the mind, alone remains resplendent. It is this state, where there is not the slightest trace of the ‘I’-thought, that is the true Being of oneself. And that is called Quiescence or Mouna (Silence).

Even when extraneous thoughts sprout up during such enquiry, do not seek to complete the rising thought but instead, deeply enquire within, ‘To whom has this thought occurred?’

Setting apart time for meditation is only for the merest spiritual novices. A man who is advancing will begin to enjoy the deeper beatitude, whether he is at work or not. While his hands are in society, his keeps his head cool in solitude.

By incessantly pursuing within yourself the inquiry ‘Who am I?’, you will know your true self and thereby attain salvation.

Knowing that the train carries all the weight, why indeed should we, the passengers travel-ling in it, carry our small individual articles of luggage on our laps to our great discomfort, instead of putting them aside and sitting at perfect ease?

If the ego rises, all else will also rise; if it subsides, all else will also subside. The deeper the humility with which we conduct ourselves, the better it is for us. If only the mind is kept under control, what matters it where one may happen to be?

Realisation is nothing but seeing God literally. Our greatest mistake is that we think of God as acting symbolically and allegorically instead of practically and literally.

This is the surest way to handicap oneself, this burdening of one’s mind with the fear of failure and thought of one’s failings. That fear is not true. The greatest error of a man is to think that he is weak by nature, evil by nature.

For men of little understanding, wife, children and such others, comprise the family. Know that for the learned, in their mind itself, there is the family of countless books as an obstacle to yoga.

“He knows what is best and when and how to do it. His is the burden. You have no longer any cares. All your cares are His. Such is surrender,” says Sri Ramana Maharshi.

There are only two ways to conquer destiny or be independent of it. One is to enquire for whom is this destiny and discover that only the ego is bound by destiny and not the Self and that the ego is non-existent.
