Amongst the big-3 Chinese carriers that operate from London Heathrow, China Southern have been one of the last to return back to near pre-pandemic level of flights.
Prior to 2020, China Southern operated to 3 destinations from London Heathrow, these being their main hub at Guangzhou with a daily flight, whilst also operating limited frequencies to Sanya, Wuhan and Zhengzhou. Before COVID-19 threw plans out of the window, China Southern were planning on providing 5-weekly flights from their new hub at Beijing-Daxing, superseding the existing Beijing-Capital hub with Airbus A380s planned to be utilised.
Whilst 2021 and 2022 were quiet years for Chinese carriers, it wasn't until the S23 schedule when those airlines began to reinstate suspended routes; Guangzhou returned to daily operation from 10th April 2023, Wuhan returned with a limited twice-weekly schedule on 25th August 2023, and at long last Beijing-Daxing would finally commence operations from 7th June 2023. Zhengzhou meanwhile now operates to and from London Gatwick instead of London Heathrow.
Since 7th June 2023, China Southern commenced operating flights between London Heathrow and Beijing-Daxing, a route that was supposed to be launched in mid-2020 initially as a 5-weekly flight. With COVID-19 and China being amongst the last countries to reopen, the launch was postponed for the S23 schedule. CZ673/674 (was previously to be numbered CZ607/608, now used by their Wuhan flight) operates daily instead of the previously planned 5-weekly operation, and with the Airbus A380s now withdrawn sees Airbus A350-900s being utilised instead.
Currently, China Southern operates 20 Airbus A350s, all of which are Airbus A350-900s.
