My first decent Butterfly shot of the year. They were very active on a warm, sunny day with lots of males flashing past in search of a mate. This female flew past me and settled for a minute, just enough time for a few shots. These are probably my favourite butterflies as they signify a start to Spring, for me and are fairly easy to get close to as they rely on their camouflage when sat still. I dug out the 7D mkii for these shots as I've not used it for some time. The image is about life size, these are medium sized butterflies and are some of the earliest to fly in this country.
It's nearly time to see the Gannets at Bempton Cliffs again. These elegant and beautiful birds winter off Northwest Africa but come to our shores to breed. About 55% of the worlds population come to sites like Bass Rock, Bempton Cliffs and Skomer every year as the nutrient rich waters around the British Isles provide the riches to ensure that the next generation will thrive. I have only come to know and love these birds over the past decade but now I long for their return every year and our few visits to the towering Chalk cliffs which form the largest mainland colony.
