To the untrained eye the many parallel tracks resemble a muli-lane highway - big and daunting to the uninitiated. Members and groundskeepers probably know their way around the course instinctively, seldom having to look at a map, an app, GPS guidance to know where they are and how to get to the place they wish to go to next.

This photo is to the east of Tokyo Bay in rural Chiba prefecture and is maybe 15 minutes before landing at Haneda airport around the shoreline on the opposite side.

Living on islands with 70% mountain terrain, the Japanese keenly conserve valuable land suited to cultivation. As a result nowadays and for centuries before, land used for housing, administration and other functions of life and livelihoods is concentrated into a single center, rather than scattered across the growing spaces for crops.

Some weather conditions like storms and overcast skies reduce the amount of power that the panels can transform into electricity for storing temporarily in batteries, or to consumer immediately. But on balance there are more productive daylight hours than not, so now there are more and more installations around rural parts of Japan, as well as on the rooftops of urban parts of the Japanese islands.

In the final 45 minutes or so from arrival at Haneda airport, approaching from the south and west, this view of the strong winds whipping up the ocean shows waves breaking along the Izu peninsula.

Much of rural Chiba prefecture has been developed as golf fairways and greens for players of the old game. In the dull colors of approaching winter, the bare strips of land stand out from the forested surroundings. Tokyo Bay is at the top of the photo. When so many courses are so near each other, perhaps it is time to invent a collective noun for sets of courses: a "green" of golf courses?

Beneath the speeding jet there are large rectangular rice paddies now cut down after the combine harvester has plucked heads from stalks and removed the husk. The course of the river and the skirt of the forested mountains are clearly defined from this height.
