IE SHIMA, OKINAWA, Japan (Aug. 3, 2022) - U.S. Marines with Battalion Landing Team 2/5, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, prepare for a MV-22B Osprey to arrive during a helicopter raid exercise on Ie Shima, Okinawa, Japan, Aug. 03, 2022. The exercise trained Marines on securing an objective, defending it, and creating a forward arming and refueling point. The mass casualty response mission allows the 31st MEU to reach victims of an attack, natural disaster or other emergent events when local medical and reactionary forces are unable to provide proper medical care. The 31st MEU is operating aboard ships of the Expeditionary Strike Group in the 7th fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with allies and partners, and serve as a ready response force to defend peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. OKINAWA, Japan (Jan. 6, 2022) An AH-1Z Viper helicopter operated by Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 265 (Rein.) Marines, with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) awaits ordinance and fuel at a Forward Arming and Refueling Point on Ie Shima Island, in Okinawa Japan, Jan. 6th 2022. The Marines conducted what is known as a hot load, refueling and loading ordinance while the helicopters are still under power.
