Hypnum imponens has to be one of my favorite mosses. It covers rotten logs in deep wet forests a distinctive yellow color. Hence its common name "Log Moss". The word "Hypnum" refers to the belief that this moss will induce sleep. At one time it was collected to stuff pillows. Patapsco Valley State Park, Maryland.
There is not much color seen in the forest during the winter -- but always something to be seen. This bright yellow log stood out from its less colored surroundings. The bright yellow is a moss (Hypnum imponens). The green patches within the yellow is another moss (Entodon seductrix). Patapsco Valley State Park, Maryland.
