This is a view of the Mohawk Lumber company mill and yard at Donna, Oregon circa 1913.
At this time the Auld brothers owned the mill. Under the founders, J. S. Magladry and John Kelly, the mill was located on McGowan creek and lumber was flumed to Donna for loading onto railcars. After the Auld brothers purchased the mill in 1908, they built a planing mill at Donna, and expanded their business including sales yards Harrisburg.
The planing mill and yard crews can be seen sitting on the piles of lumber ready to load for shipment on the Southern Pacific freight train that ran to Wendling daily.
This mill and yard was located north of the current store on the land north and west of where the railroad grade crossed McGowan creek.
This the view from the I-10, Atchafalaya Basin Bridge, which passes through the swamp for many miles. Though the swamp is very alive with alligators, egrets and other wildlife, the tree stumps are a sad testament to the rapacious logging that destroyed the forest. After a century of logging, the saws went quite in the 1920's. The trees will never recover.
It was sad and yet fascinating.
