Dogs and Water = Bliss

A small pack of 14 dogs, including pups, came to rest by a pool of water after a busy morning hunting. They all came to take a drink before taking a rest while the pups played. Some of the dogs were more wary than others of our presence.

A trip to Nyerere (formally Selous) National Park. Emerald season February 2023

"The African Wild Dog is one of the most misunderstood and endangered carnivores on the planet. Commonly mistaken for Hyenas, African Wild Dogs are actually quite different, both physically and behaviourally.
AFRICAN WILD DOG:- Small & slender: 18 - 34kg, 61 - 76cm tall; Efficient & active hunters; Classified in the CANIDAE, or true dog family; Mottled coat; Large, Rounded Ear that Stands up; Litter size 1-18; Communal care of pups from the pack; Team players caring for all pack members.
HYENA:- Larger build 35 - 86kg, 66 - 85cm tall; Scavengers, Stealing a carcass off other predators; Not a dog, is more closely related to cats, civets & Genets; Spotted coat; Smaller ears that sit against the head; Litter size 1-4 Females only care for pups; More competitive, form loose alliances."
