This galaxy is found in the constellation of Coma Berenices. A spiral galaxy it lies about 17 million light-years from us but the most striking aspect is the dark band of absorbing dust. The galaxy was catalogued by Charles Messier as M64.
This dark dust is partially in front of the galaxy's bright nucleus giving the galaxy its nickname of the "Black Eye Galaxy". It is also known as the "Evil Eye" or "Sleeping Beauty" galaxy.
A Type 2 Seyfert galaxy the whole system has a diameter of around 54,000 light-years.
Imaged with a Skywatcher Esprit 120ED Triplet Apo and a ZWO2600MC camera.
A total of 7Hrs of guided exposures during the night of the 9 -10 April.
Temp. matched Darks, Dark Flats and Flats for calibration.
Thanks for looking!
Galaxy season is here! This is the Black Eye Galaxy (also called Sleeping Beauty Galaxy or Evil Eye Galaxy and designated Messier 64, M64, or NGC 4826) is a relatively isolated spiral galaxy 17 million light-years away in the mildly northern constellation of Coma Berenices. A dark band of absorbing dust partially in front of its bright nucleus gave rise to its nicknames of the "Black Eye", "Evil Eye", or "Sleeping Beauty" galaxy. (ref: Wikipedia)

23/03/2025 - Black Eye Galaxy M64
This is by far the smallest object I've attempted to image and I even managed to catch some detail. This night was a little problematic because I need to align my tracking mount with Polaris, but I accidentally aligned it to a star below Polaris and ended up losing about half an hour of data. Genius. Despite this, this is still better than I expected it to be.

It was supposed to be a clear night all night last night. It started well, but then banks of clouds rolled in and out so I only got a little over an hour's worth of data when I had to let it run all night.
The Black Eye Galaxy (also called Sleeping Beauty Galaxy or Evil Eye Galaxy and designated Messier 64, M64, or NGC 4826) is a relatively isolated spiral galaxy 17 million light-years away in the northern constellation of Coma Berenices.
Easily identified by the spectacular band of absorbing dust partially obscuring its bright nucleus, the Black Eye galaxy is characterized by its bizarre internal motion. The gas in the outer regions of this remarkable galaxy is rotating in the opposite direction from the gas and stars in its inner regions. This strange behaviour can be attributed to a merger between M64 and a satellite galaxy over a billion years ago. So this impact gave it that distinctive black eye.
