my arm that does not belong to me

Today I had shoulder surgery to repair badly torn rotator cuff. Part of this procedure is a nerve block injection which blocks completely all sensation and muscle control in whole arm. Cool part was that the anesthesiologist showed me how is the ulrasound-guided injection done. I saw on computer screen my pulsating carotid artery and then how the inserted needle approaches the brachial plexus.

The nerve block worked really well and even now, hours after I woke from anesthesia, I have no sensation what so ever. It results in spooky illusions, such as when I walk, the arm moves a little, and the visual information not accompanied by corresponding body sensation brings out panicky reaction: "Crap, my arm is falling off my body!"

It is my arm, but it does no belong to me. At least for now.

Human body is a fascinating machine!

It's death from above in the eyes of the patient. Don't worry, you'll get through it.
