The False oil beetle (Oedemera nobilis - Fraaie schijnbok) is abundant in spring on several flower species, where it feeds on pollen and nectar. The image shows a female, without the swollen femora of a male specimen. © Tom Kisjes

At the foot of the floral Ooijse bandijk, close to the village Ooij and the Waal river, I photographed one of many flowering Greater knapweeds (Centaurea scabiosa - Grote centaurie). Rare in my country, of origin to be found along our major rivers and in South Limburg. Characteristic of calcareous grassland. A magnet for many insects. © Tom Kisjes
