In a series of intimate portraits celebrating the people of Canberra, I had the privilege of photographing a remarkable young girl on a golden summer afternoon. For privacy reasons, her name and age remain undisclosed, but what I can share is the undeniable presence she brought to the lens—an enchanting mix of youthful innocence and a wisdom far beyond her years.
It’s rare to meet someone so young who possesses an effortless grace, but with her, it was as if she was born for the camera. She embraced each moment with a natural charisma that many seasoned models spend years trying to perfect. The lens didn’t just capture her; it adored her.
Whether striking a serious, contemplative pose or radiating pure joy, she instinctively knew how to tell a story through expression alone. There was no pretence, no hesitation—just an unfiltered authenticity that made every frame feel alive.

Young female chinese performer

This portrait is part of a series of intimate photographs capturing the people of Canberra. It was taken during the Chinese New Year celebrations in Dickson.
Lunar New Year is a time for family, traditions, and delicious food. In Canberra, known for its vibrant multicultural community and love of great cuisine, there were many opportunities to celebrate the Year of the Snake.
I watched an array of talented dancers from various troupes, including one of the youngest performers. For privacy reasons, her name and age will remain undisclosed. Alongside her fellow dancers, she delighted the crowds who gathered in Dickson to celebrate Chinese New Year. It was truly heart-warming to see the joy they brought to the audience. This festival was a tremendous success and a fantastic lead-up to the National Multicultural Festival

As part of my ongoing series of intimate portraits on our road trip, I had the privilege of photographing this spirited young man. To respect his privacy, I won’t reveal his name or age, but what I can share is the joyful energy he brought to the moment. This special occasion marked his birthday, which he celebrated at one of Australia’s most iconic landmarks – the Big Banana.
The photo captures him mid-celebration, thoroughly enjoying a cupcake, the sweetness of the treat mirrored in his radiant smile. It was a pure, candid moment, one that spoke volumes about the simple joys of childhood and the warmth of family.
As my gift, I created this portrait for him and his delightful family, whom I had the pleasure of meeting that day. It’s my hope that as the years go by and he looks back on this photograph, he’ll see more than just a snapshot of his younger self. Perhaps it will inspire him to reflect on how far he’s come, or even to capture a similar image of his own one day, charting the evolution of his journey through life.

Phil the frog father_2

From my intimate portrait series, let me introduce Phil Lewis - better known as Phil the Frog Father. If you're a movie enthusiast, you'll catch the clever play on words in his nick name. (somewhere in this tale there will be some reference to frogs)
During a recent road trip to Northern New South Wales, we stopped in Forster for a day of exploration. We decided to visit Forster Beach Baths, where I spent some time soaking in the stunning scenery while keeping an eye on the kids. With my camera in hand, I wandered around, drawn to the magnificent landscapes and huge waves.
While walking along the wall of the pool, I noticed a gentleman swimming laps with focused precision. After a while, he climbed out of the water, still wearing his mask, and walked past me. We exchanged pleasantries—just a simple “hello” and “excuse me.” But then I couldn’t resist starting a conversation.
“That’s a strong northern accent,” I said. “My guess—Liverpool?”
“Spot on!” he replied with a smile, confirming he was indeed a Scouse
What followed was a fascinating conversation that wove through my own experiences in Liverpool and his journey to Australia in search of a new life. As we spoke, he noticed my camera gear and commented on it, revealing that he, too, was a passionate photographer. Phil specialises in underwater diving photography and has a unique focus on macro photography, particularly capturing frogs at night in national parks—a passion that inspired his moniker, The Frogfather.
Phil shared that he has a Facebook and Instagram page, where he showcases his stunning photography. If you’re into nature and macro photography, I highly recommend checking it out: Phil the Frogfather on Facebook. It was an encounter that started with a simple exchange but led to a memorable connection, and I couldn’t resist capturing the essence of the man behind the lens in this portrait. (and just for the record, the goggles make the picture!) Thanks Phi

Every once in a while, you find yourself in the perfect moment for a portrait. I’m taken back to October 2023 at Floriade, when my family boarded a carriage on the iconic Ferris wheel. Right in front of me sat the perfect model – a young girl, recently arrived from Iran, now living in Canberra. I asked her father if I could take a quick photo, and though she was a bit shy, she soon lit up with a beautiful, charming smile. It’s easily one of my favourite portraits of 2023. Now, my mission is to print it and gift it to her parents as a keepsake of this special moment.
NB: I would hope that we continue to foster an inclusive and accepting society in this country and avoid what is happening in the United States where a high profiled candidate is spewing offensive, racist and xenophobic comments creating hatred and fear.

Clare

This portrait is part of my series capturing members of Canberra’s local community. Here we have Claire Walters, whom I met by chance on one of my frequent wanderings around Civic. Claire has a remarkable story: she’s in her first year studying nursing and paramedicine. By day, she works full-time as a project manager in government, and in her spare time, studies, and volunteers with St. John Ambulance.
To do this type or work, it requires a deeply caring and empathetic nature, as well as strong communication skills which came across in our conversation. On a visual note, I couldn’t help but admire how the late morning light highlighted Claire’s beautiful red hair – kind of sums up her Instagram handle – 'Claire the red'. It was great meeting her on that lovely morning. Thank you for your time.

myself and the aga's copy

I am not afraid of stepping in front of the lens - This is for the @52frames_competition It’s a scorching day in the garden, and the heat feels relentless, a reminder of nature’s untamed power. Among the vibrant greens and bursts of purple agapanthus swaying slightly in the faintest of breezes, I find myself facing one of my greatest creative challenges—creating a self-portrait.
This time, I’ve brought out one of my cherished antique cameras, a piece of history that feels alive in my hands. My goal is twofold: to capture the delicate beauty of the agapanthus before the oppressive sun decimates them, and to document myself in action, an artist immersed in the process.
I’ve chosen to approach the task with a street-style framing, seeking an unpolished, authentic glimpse of the moment. Balancing the technical complexities of the old camera with the demands of composing a self-portrait is a dance of patience and intuition which on occasions, I lost.
This process, though challenging, is deeply personal. Self-portraits demand a vulnerability, a willingness to confront and expose one’s essence through the lens. In the searing heat, amid the fleeting beauty of the agapanthus, I hope to capture not just an image but a narrative—one of resilience, creativity, and the fleeting yet enduring relationship between humanity and nature

Tom copy

From an intimate series of portraits taken around Canberra – This is Tom, wandering Civic with his mates Mo and Gavin on a sunny October morning. They were full of laughter, soaking up the day, and even agreed to pose for a quick shot on a particularly hot morning.
But looking into Tom’s face, there’s more than just youthful humour. There’s a thoughtful intensity, the kind that suggests a deeper scepticism about the world around him. Tom, like so many of his generation, grapples with trust issues toward the establishment – and honestly, who could blame him? In times like these, where distrust in institutions and politicians is all too common, his wariness feels not only justified but almost inevitable. Thanks, Tom, for pausing to chat and share a laugh with your friends
