This bird is found in tropical and subtopical forest and woodland in Central and South America.

Over its range there are significant variations in plumage, iris colour and voice. In other words, more than one species may be involved and this bird may form a "species complex" (two or more cryptic species hidden under one species name).

This is a small tyrant flycatcher, with darker brown wings and a short tail; it has a whitish breast, black legs and eyes, and a short, sharp-pointed bill, for hawking insects in flight.
