The Torrione and Rivellino
together with the Palazzo comunale with its Tower are among the oldest and most precious monuments of the city. They are located opposite each other, at a distance, in the same ancient street, the center of medieval life in the Principality. Seeing them united together produces a surprising optical effect.
The Torrione e Rivellino complex is a military architecture of Piombino and constitutes the main defensive structure in the walls of Renaissance Piombino. The high tower is the oldest part of the complex and dates back to 1212.

After the formation of the Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia in the early 19th century, the Habsburg empire extensively fortified the city of Verona, which became part of the Quadrilatero defensive system between the rivers Mincio and Adige.
Built on the bank of the river Adige, San Giorgio, this part of fortification of Verona had a medieval predecessor: In the 1320s, Lord Canegrande della Scala had built a section of the town wall here which was demolished by the Austrian engineers to construct the ravelin preserved to this day.
