The unknown Moon

The meteor stones fell preferably on the unknown side of the moon. Here we see the other side, photographed by Lunik III in 1959. These historical observations revealed a completely different landscape than the side we know, with large plains and few visible craters.

The Moon

Our ancient natural satellite is full of round pits formed by the fall of meteor rocks. She is sometimes referred to by her Latin name Luna. The black spots are seas of dust or perhaps lava.

Lunik III

This photographer's satellite aka Luna 3, launched in 1959, showed us in a few images the mysterious unknown side of the moon, which has aroused our curiosity for centuries. It was the first mission to photograph the far side of the Moon and the third Soviet space probe to be sent to the neighborhood of the Moon.

Lunik II

Luna 2 aka Lunik II was a 389 kg shell launched by the Russians at an altitude of 384,000 km and struck the Moon at the point indicated on the picture by the frame. It was the first spacecraft to reach the surface of the Moon, and the first human-made object to make contact with another celestial body.

Moonlight

The white moon basks in the sunlight on a silvery night. Will it still fascinate us after the astronauts have unveiled its secret?

OGO

Orbiting Geophysical Observatory. Satellite that performs about twenty operations such as detecting space radiation, collecting space dust and determining the force exchange among celestial bodies. The satellite successfully studied the interactions between the Earth and the Sun.
