Trade train

In 1986 the state of South Australia celebrated its sesquicentenary. The federally owned Australian National, which was headquartered in SA, formed a special Jubilee train that travelled around the state on both broad and standard gauge.

On 18 March 1986, ALCo 955 is seen hauling the train through Ambleside en route to visiting towns on the broad gauge branch lines out in the Murray Mallee.

1986 - The Jubilee Train

In 1986 the state of South Australia celebrated its sesquicentenary and the federally owned Australian National, which was headquartered in SA, formed a special Jubilee train that travelled around the state on both broad and standard gauge.

On 18 March 1986, ALCo 955 was seen approaching Mount Barker Jct in the Adelaide Hills, hauling the train from Adelaide to Tailem Bend en route to visiting towns on branch lines out in the Murray Mallee.

The irony is that 30 years on, apart from the mainlines, every branch the train travelled on in 1986 has been closed. That's progress!

The harvest is in full swing as broad gauge ALCos 955/835/836 sweep through Roseworthy with a loaded grain train from Balaklava to Port Adelaide on Sunday 15 December 1991. Despite it being a weekend another loaded train from Tarlee with two more ALCos (out of sight) was shunting the silos here at the same time.

The semaphore signals were a legacy of Roseworthy's main line past, which ironically had come to an end some 9 years earlier. Two days later they finally became redundant and work gangs quickly removed all trace of them when the train order working boundary was moved south to Gawler.

Nine up front

In March 1987, eight broad-gauge 930 'World' ALCos, over a fifth of the fleet of 37, head a freight away from Gillman Yard in Port Adelaide - plus one 500 class shunter on a transfer move. Under normal operating rules at that time, only the first 3 or 4 locos would be under power.
