Comin' to get'cha

Just another of my reptilian friends attempting to soak up a few more rays while lounging on the part of Horsepen Bayou that we refer to as the mud flats. This is a newly formed area that has been added to the bayou over the past four or five years. This particular alligator is in the eight-foot range and it’s difficult to tell if it’s an intermediate sized male or a large female. You decide while I watch from a distance.

I’m going to call this one a male because it’s between 9 and 10 feet long. Raised itself out of the water and took up residence on a bit of land on Horsepen Bayou. The fog had burned away a bit and things were beginning to brighten up on the bayou.

Of…that great white alligator Moby Jack!!
So, he isn’t white, but his massive bulk could place him in the great category as far as alligators are concerned on the bayou. The No. 1 place still belongs to Big Boy, but Jack and a couple of his buddies on the bayou are in competition to claim that No. 2 spot. There are three of these big bulls in the 13-foot range that take up a lot of space on the bayou when you meet them. This was Jack sunning himself last year.

I am horribly late today as internet issue kept me offline until early in the afternoon and I was also unfortunate enough to have that pesky Pandy poke its nose into my business when I tried to log on. I’m back but I will also warn everyone that I’ll be a bit hit and miss here on Flickr for the next few days. I WILL be on the water in the morning one way or the other. It’s been almost four months since I’ve been to the bayou, and I am hoping that the back will not cause me any problems in the morning. Trouble or not, I’m going canoeing. I have a doctor’s appointment in the afternoon as well. Wednesday is also a busy day, so it might be Thursday before I return.

No need to comment on both photos but wanted to give everyone a couple of different looks. Hope you have an enjoyable week. Cheers.

A study in textures

The hard light adds depth to each scute (the boney plates or scales that are a part of the alligator’s skin) on Jack’s back. I did have a capture of him from a distance, but I liked the way the scutes are so well defined in this scene. It’s definitely hard light, but I’m not going to go up and ask him to reposition himself. This is Jack, the behemoth with the one eye missing and only about half of his 13-foot body showing in this scene. You can also see the large mass of fat on his neck between his head and his body. He doesn’t miss many meals and has an ample supply of stores on hand. Photo take on Horsepen Bayou.
