A vulnerable species--we saw at least two on this trip, and they were only a little wary. This one seemed accustomed to people taking photos from near the pond. As it sauntered out of the pond and into the woods, I kept hearing Henry Mancini's "Baby Elephant Walk" from the 1962 movie Hatari.
Seen regularly in the area around Kabalebo, Suriname.

She managed to escape, but her cub did not.
Sadly, small animals and birds have suffered from persecution by dogs that are abandoned in the environmental park.
These dogs are natural hunters and are becoming a serious problem in the Brasília Mineral Water National Park.
