This souvenir shop dates back to 1944 when it was a Gulf gas station owned by Leland Hayes. In 1959, the business was sold to Jene Klaverweiden who changed it to a Texaco. A few years later, the road needed widening, and the gas pumps had to be moved.
At this point, there wasn't enough space to keep gas pumps and Jene decided to turn the business into Jene's Trading Post. To catch visitors attention, he added the neon sign, and a large Teepee which served as a vestibule.
My wife and I visited this store. The owner told me it was the only remaining teepee store along Route 66. With that, I assumed this meant it was originally part of a chain and this was the only one standing, just like the wigwam motels. however, now I wonder if this was always the only one.
Also of note, the nearest tribe, the Navajo, didn't use teepees. Instead they were used by the tribes to the east at the Great Plains.
