I photographed this coal elevator in Thurmond, WV, at the beginning of February. I've now photographed it again. Maybe next time I'll finally find the shot I was looking for.
Anyway, coal would get dumped in the bottom, and then ride a lift on the back of the building to the top. Then it would pour onto chutes (no longer there) through the holes in the side of the building.
Still an active rail line - just hasn't needed coal in QUITE some time.
