A beautiful Jaguar Named Cesi

More Brazil jaguar pics from last summer:

This is Cesi, one of the dozens of jaguars named in "Jaguarland", a small section of the Pantanal. She was the first of the 11 individual jaguars we found in the 4 days we stayed at the SouthWild Flotel. We found her within 5 minutes of hitting the water on our way to the Flotel! We observed her for 20 minutes as she searched the river bank for a meal. Occasionally, she would watch us.

Those eyes...

This is Lisa, cub of Ryan (if I got the spelling of her name right), and she is one of dozens of jaguars named in "Jaguarland", a small section of the Pantanal. She was one of the 11 individual jaguars we found in the 4 days we stayed at the SouthWild Flotel.

International Jaguar Day - November 29th

Happy International Jaguar Day, November 29th. This day celebrates the Americas' largest wild cat.

Imagine zooming along a narrow channel of a river and all of a sudden someone shouts out "jaguar". You look up and see this specular beast staring back at you. Heart stopping! We were the lone boat watching her. She must have been swimming just before we found her.

This is Civilized, one of the dozens of jaguars named in "Jaguarland", a small section of the Pantanal. She was one of the 11 individual jaguars we found in the 4 days we stayed at the SouthWild Flotel.

The Matriarch

Meet Patricia. Patricia is a 13 year old jaguar and one of the most famous in the Pantanal. She is the matriarch in "Jaguarland". We had the opportunity to observe her on several occasions in the 4 days we were on the river. Here she had just emerged from the water, walking along the bank, before dropping back into the river.

Lara, a three year old jaguar

This was the third jaguar we saw in the Pantanal. Her name is Lara, a 3 year old female. We saw her on a few occasions and this first sighting was right at sunset so the conditions were not the best for photography. Shooting hand held at ISO 5000, f/4, 1/320s from a boat was not ideal but I managed a few good pics.

Wattled Jacana by Hamilton Images

Wattled Jacana

Taken from a boat just before sunset.

Striking marsh bird, medium-sized with exceptionally long toes. In some regions adult is entirely black; other populations more similar to Northern Jacana with rufous upperparts. Always has red forehead and wattle at base of bill. Juveniles very similar to Northern Jacana: bronzy-brown above with white underparts and eyebrow; note yellow bill and long toes to separate from other marsh birds. All ages show yellow wings in flight. Found in wetlands, usually with a combination of grasses and lily pads.

Ophelia, Our Second Jaguar

This was the second jaguar we saw in the Pantanal. This is Ophelia. She made an appearance for just 1-2 minutes before she disappeared into the jungle. This may have been a brief viewing but amazing nonetheless.

Black-collared Hawk by Hamilton Images

Black-collared Hawk

Attractive chunky hawk of marshes and wetlands. Usually seen perched quietly near water, waiting to swoop down and snatch fish or frogs. Adult is distinctive, with mostly orange plumage and a whitish head (black collar is often hard to see). Immature is brownish overall, duller than the adult, but with a similar pattern. Note rather pale, dull pinkish legs and feet (yellow or orange on most other hawks). In flight looks very broad winged and short tailed.

American Pygmy Kingfisher - Male by Hamilton Images

American Pygmy Kingfisher - Male

We were lucky to see this 5" kingfisher in the open.

American Pygmy Kingfisher - Male

Tiny kingfisher of shady forest streams and mangroves. Often darts away when disturbed, but can be confiding if approached quietly and usually perches fairly low over the water. About half of the size of Green Kingfisher, and easily distinguished by rusty underparts and poorly contrasting pale neck collar (bright white on Green Kingfisher). Female has a narrow green breast band, lacking on male.

Ringed Kingfisher at Sunset by Hamilton Images

Ringed Kingfisher at Sunset

Largest kingfisher in Americas with exceptionally enormous bill and raucous calls. Blue-gray with shaggy crest, white collar, and rufous belly. Male and female similar, but note different breast pattern: entirely rufous on male, while female has blue-gray band bordered by white. Often conspicuous, searching shallow water for fish from a prominent perch and chattering noisily when disturbed. Singles or pairs are also often observed flying high overhead and giving loud "keck" calls. Nests in burrows excavated in banks, generally along watercourses.

Velante, A Beautiful 11 yo Jaguar

Meet Velante. She is 11 years old and was the 7th jaguar we saw when in the Pantanal. We saw her on 2 occasions. In the first image she paused briefly from grooming to stare at us and the second was taken while she walked the river bank. I thought the second image would work well as a B&W. What do you think?

Black-crowned Night Heron by Hamilton Images

Black-crowned Night Heron

One more heron species we photographed in the Pantanal. We spotted this individual a bit before sunset where it was probably getting ready for a night of hunting.

Black-crowned Night Heron

Stocky heron with neck usually tucked in. Adults overall pale grayish with black cap and back. Red eyes. Juveniles noticeably different, brown and streaky with yellow eyes. Often crouched under overhanging branches during the day. Feeds nocturnally for fish, frogs and other prey. Where it overlaps with Yellow-crowned Night-Heron, note large teardrop-shaped white spots on wing coverts which Yellow-crowned lacks.
