LINEATED FOLIAGE-GLEANER Juvenile Syndactyla subalaris. This juvenile Lineated Foliage-gleaner is foraging in a small tree on a mountainside in the Tandayapa Valley in northwestern Ecuador on December 23, 2013.

The Lineated Foliage-gleaner might easily be confused with the Striped Treehunter Thripadectes holostictus which also occurs here. The Lineated Foliage-gleaner can be distinguished by having the center of the throat unstriped, if you can see the bird from the front. Although that characteristic cannot be discerned in this image, the juvenile features of the Lineated Foliage-gleaner shown here are sufficient. Those include the wide ochraceous orange stripes on the nape combined with ochraceous orange on the side of the neck (and on the throat although not visible here). There is also a narrow ochraceous orange postocular stripe.

The Lineated Foliage-gleaner lives from Costa Rica through Panamá to Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Perú.
