Merry Merry...

from Charlie and I in Wisconsin.

My Grandson Dennis was kind enough to take a shot of us this past weekend.

I just want to wish everyone Happy Holidays!

Checking the ice caves

...with Charlie.

We try and get to the 'caves' every December around this time to see if any good ice sheets are forming.
With the wet weather we had this fall, it looks like we will have some beautiful ice as long as we get the cold weather!

By February the rock shelter should be fully encased in a iced curtain.

Ice Cave Hunting

at Weister Creek near Potts Corners.

This is an area in the Kickapoo Valley Reserve that has multiple layers of rock shelters that have seeping water coming through them.
In cold winters they create ice curtains. The top 'caves' are over 6 foot tall and about 6 feet or so deep.

One more icy formation

This area usually has so much ice formed on it that you cannot see the wall behind it. Often one can walk right up to the wall on ice.

Along Weister Creek

This generally is a spectacular display of ice formations alongside Weister Creek.
It is approximately a mile long hike to get to here from the parking area.

Inside the Ice Cave

A short video of what it was like yesterday inside the top right rock shelter.
Due to the warm temps, the ice is slowly melting and not much has formed this year compared to the last few years.

However, I still love visiting the 'cave'. It is my happy place.

Who says summer is the only time to use IR?

For comparison, the same-ish shot in regular light is attached in the comments.

This is hands down one of my top 5 favorite places in KVR.

A bit of hiking

My nephew and his wife came to visit and went hiking at KVR.

We collected Shrimp of the Woods mushrooms and had a wonderful adventure.

What caught my eye was the single tree in the field with the old farm equipment in the foreground.

Weister Creek Trail

Charlie heads out in front of me on a long lead line.
The deep chopped grass ended up being too much for his short legs!

Curving Waters

The lines the stream made just felt incredible here.

Weister Reflections

This would be a great trail in the winter time too!
The sound of the water running over the rocks and logs alongside were so beautiful.

Mowed Path by Mulewings~

Mowed Path

I don't know how often they mow it, but it was nice that it was done.
The trail is a bit lumpy and bumpy. It is harder to walk on mowed grass with ruts underneath than a hard packed hiking trail.

But the views were worth it.

Wiester Creek

My birthday gift to myself yesterday was time to go hiking at KVR and check out the grass trail alongside Wiester Creek.

Charlie is so short that he had a hard time with the deep fluff of the mowed grass.
I ended up carrying him most of the way which sort of made things a bit harder.

So we just went slower.

I took only my Full Spectrum Oly camera that was fitted with a Hoya IR 72 filter.

The views did not dissapoint.

Even better, Charlie met a new dog friend named Kona Tree, and I was able to walk with his owner for half of the hike.

It ended up being a great day.
So pardon the photo dump here!

I have more photos, but I think I'll wait a few days on those!

Kona Tree

Charlie's new trail friend!
What a handsome and well behaved fellow.

Not a bitey dog!

Weister Creek in April

I try to visit this spot once in every season.

This is probably my favorite place to go to on the Kickapoo Valley Reserve. The view never disappoints me.
