Pinus Mugo 'Sunshine' 24W1 Mugo N4- by F. D. Richards

Pinus Mugo 'Sunshine' 24W1 Mugo N4-

Pinus Mugo 'Sunshine' 24W1 Mugo N4- (Wiel Linssen, The Netherlands 1990s) Mugo Pine Dwarf, Size at 10 years: 3x5ft., yellow lined needles , USDA Hardiness Zone 3, Michigan Bloom Month -, In Garden Bed N4 for 4.7 YEARS (Stanley). Planted in 2019.

American Conifer Society: Pinus mugo 'Sunshine' is a variegated dwarf form of mugo pine with rich-green needles variegated with yellow bands. This cultivar is fairly vigorous for a mugo pine; growing as tall as wide. The variegation is durable, not burning in full sun. Typical rate of growth in most areas is 2.5 inches (6 cm) per year resulting in a shimmering globe, 2 feet (60 cm) tall and wide after 10 years in the garden or landscape. It should be noted that in some climates, this cultivar has been reported to assume a pyramidal tree form, so as with any recently-introduced conifer, the collector should be prepared for anything.

Wiel Linssen, former owner of Libo Nursery, Baexem, The Netherlands is credited with the origin and introduction of the fine new cultivar. The original plant was a seedling selection that Wiel made at the nursery of Anton Roefs in Velden, The Netherlands in the early 1990s. Anton gave Wiel the seeding that he later planted in his private garden in Baexem to evaluate for a few years. By the mid 1990s, he named it and began introducing it to the nursery trade.

Stanley & Sons Nursery: A variegated form of Mugo Pine. Each stem has leaves that are marked with many yellow lines. Not just one but many lines. Grows 4-6 inches a year. Should candle to make look nicer.

Picea abies 'Mikulasovice' 24W1 Norway N4-

Picea abies 'Mikulasovice' 24W1 Norway N4- (Czech Republic, 1960) Dwarf Norway Spruce, Size at 10 years: 2x2ft., thick dark green needles, USDA Hardiness Zone 3, Michigan Bloom Month -, In Garden Bed N4 for 20 MONTHS (Ashville). Planted in 2022.

American Conifer Society: Picea abies 'Mikulášovice' is a highly desirable and distinctive selection of Norway spruce. It's overall form is irregularly globose with dense random branches that hold very thick dark green needles. Extraordinarily thick terminal shoots with longer, thicker needles often appear to add to the visual effect. This is a great choice for collectors in search of unusual-looking conifers

Mikulášovice is the name of a town in Czech Republic where the broom was likely discovered. A Polish cultivar called 'Krnak' is virtually identical and is thought by most to be a renaming.

Stanley & Sons Nursery: A dwarf, golden Mugo Pine. One of the best looking golden mugo's in winter time. In summer leaves green. Grows 2 -4 inches a year.

American Conifer Society: Quote from Coenosium Gardens "This selection has an exceptionally bright gold winter color and distinctively long needles. Its mature shape is much lower and denser than a typical v. pumilio. Conifers The Illustrated Encyclopedia states "A compact shrub to 80 cm tall, with yellow needles in winter, less so in summer."

Picea abies 'Argenteospica' 24W1 Norway N4- by F. D. Richards

Available under a Creative Commons by-sa license

Picea abies 'Argenteospica' 24W1 Norway N4-

Picea abies 'Argenteospica' 24W1 Norway N4- (Germany 1800s) Intermediate Norway Spruce, Size at 10 years: 5x3ft., Silver-Tipped , USDA Hardiness Zone 3, Michigan Bloom Month -, In Garden Bed N4 for 4.7 YEARS (Stanley). Planted in 2019.

American Conifer Society: Picea abies 'Argenteospica' is a relatively slow-growing, tree-form of Norway spruce that is virtually identical to the typical species with the exception of the spring push of fresh foliage which is bright creamy white in color that darkens to rich green later in the season. It's slightly slower growth rate is likely attributable to the few months of decreased chlorophyll each spring. After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen will measure 6 feet (1.8 m) tall and 4 feet (1.2 m) wide, annual growth rate of 6 to 8 inches (15 - 20 cm).

This cultivar originated as a seedling selected in the late 1800s by Herm. A. Hesse Nursery, Weener am Ems, Germany. Ludwig Beissner formally described it in botanical literature in 1891 in Handbuch der Nadelholzkunde. In the Latin language, "argenteopica" translates into "silver spikes."
