Caption: Beauty May Be Preserved - The scenic beauty of Hidden Valley's ranch lands may be retained if Ventura County planners agree to exclusive agricultural zoning which could save the area from development. Circa 1885. Mule teams, men, wagon, sacks of wheat. Long conveyor belt with motor. Janss Ranch area, which later became Oaks mall. Photographer unknown.

*Note, the same photograph appears on the Water and Power Museum website, with slightly different information, placing the time about 1900, and identifying the rider, lower right as J.R. Williams and the location as San Fernando Valley. Which location is correct? Our information was provided by the Janss family, when they gave the print to local historian Pat Allen. The print in our collection is a different original print, it does not have the tear or handwriting present on the DWP print. LHP03317, CTO_150.

To be saved? Barranca Lichen

Contact sheet has 30 images, those not printed include tire in stream, oak tree and horseback rider, yucca, overturned car, long views of the flats leading to the barranca. Historically this area was known as the Salto, part of the Hunt Ranch. Long article in Vista section included arguments from Tom Maxwell and others that the area should be preserved as a public open space or park and bird refuge. (Copy of article in file) Getting Rare - Lichen (left) is a delicate form of vegetation and easily affected by smog. This type of plant is rare in smoggy areas where the pollution kills it. It grows plentifully in The Barranca. News Chronicle Collection. Photographer Tom Wyneken, 10-04-1970_1a, CTO_525.

Westlake Cleaning

Three men in hip-waders clear weeds from edge of lake. Other images on contact sheet show several similar views, and shots of the lake and ducks. Caption: Harvest Time - Westlake lake maintenance workers use rakes and a strainer to remove underwater weeds growing near the shoreline of the 150-acre lake. Similar weeds, growing in the main lake channel out of the reach of the rakes, have alarmed residents, who claim the lake is no longer safe for sailing. Westlake officials are reluctant to use chemicals to kill the weeds, fearing an upset in the ecology of the lake. News Chronicle Collection, photographer Bob Pool, 10-09-1970_1, CTO_529.
