Dominican friars played an important part when the city of Cartagena was founded in 1533. Their first simple monastery was built during the early 16th century. It was destroyed by fire in 1552. The Convent of Santo Domingo was built on the site.
The Convent of Santo Domingo is located next to the Cathedral of Cartagena in the Plaza Santo Domingo, a popular square in the old city of Cartagena, Colombia. It is the oldest church in Cartagena; construction took approximately 150 years, beginning in 1579 and coming to an end in 1730.
The exterior of the Convent is rather plain. The inside, however, is beautiful with a marble altarpiece beneath the nave’s 33 foot blue ceiling with an image of Christ carved in wood.
