Eco Photo 4

This Pur screw on water filtration system was recently purchased by my roommates and I for our home here in College Park. The purpose of purchasing this filtration device was to completely eliminate the use of plastic water bottles in our home, furthermore reducing human impact from plastic on the environment, and providing us with a means of clean, purified drinking water. It is said that Americans alone purchase close to 29 billion plastic water bottles every year, 1 of every 6 of which eventually making its way to a recycling bin. So for the other 5 of every 6 in this 29 billion, they end up in landfills. These water bottles then sit in these landfills for hundreds of years, releasing harmful pollutants and toxins into the water and soil as they decompose. By beginning to globally utilize water filtration systems like these and eliminating use of plastic water bottles as a whole, we can begin to create a healthier environment and restore pollutant destroyed ecosystems. This excess plastic water bottle use is an extreme hazard to the environment, and a huge waste of natural resources. This topic of implementation of water filtration systems can be related to the United Nations 6th Sustainable Development Goal, Clean Water and Sanitation. This 6th SDG laid out by the United Nations goes in to depth about how to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. In 2017, only 71% of the global population used safely managed drinking water, leaving 2.2 billion people without. By offering filtration systems like this globally, we can provide people with readily clean drinking water while simultaneously reducing our footprint by eliminating the use of plastic.

National Arboretum

This is a photo that I took at the National Arboretum when I went to DC back in September. The National Arboretum was established in 1927 through Congress and is administered by the U.S. department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service. The 446 acres of land consist of outdoor gardens with a plethora of different plant species as well as research centers. The research consists of research on trees, shrubs, turf, and floral plants, development of new technologies for the floral and nursery industries, taxonomy and nomenclature of ornamental plants and their wild relatives as well as the collection, preservation, and distribution of ornamental plant germplasm (U.S. National Arboretum).

I feel as though this image is related to SDG 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation. One of the major aspects of this goal is research and development in order to build these resilient infrastructures and foster innovation. The National Arboretum prides itself on its research and their education towards the public. Spending time researching the environment, different species, and the use of technology in these aspects is important when attempting to upgrade the current technologies around us.

The Arboretum acts as an outdoor learning garden which also relates to SDG 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Often times marginalized groups do not have the opportunity to learn about environmental issues or research being done in the environmental field but the national arboretum acts as a place to draw in the public into a beautiful outdoor garden and share this knowledge. Some educational events at the Arboretum include public education programs, including symposia, lectures, workshops, and demonstrations; plant, flower, and art exhibitions; interpretive brochures and signs; group tours; public relations (U.S. National Arboretum). In my opinion, the National Arboretum is just one of the many beautiful spots in the DMV but this is definitely one that many people should attempt to visit at least once!

waterfall

This photo was taken in Pisgah National Forest in NC during a recent backpacking trip. It uses the UN SDG goal of clean water and sanitation. This is a very clean natural water source that is fed by rainwater coming from the mountains. Although we did not see any wildlife directly when we were at this waterfall, it could also apply to the concept of life on land. The pool at the bottom of the waterfall could definitely be used as a watering source for some of the wildlife. An ecological concept that this photo shows is the water cycle. It shows water coming down from the mountains where it will collect in bigger and bigger rivers until eventually finding its way back to the ocean.

Solar Power in College Park by reifnkmt24

Solar Power in College Park

Last week I found this solar panel powering a security camera at the top of a local parking garage. While it looks small, this camera happens to overlook a corner of one of the most concentrated residential areas in College Park, and my route home from class (normally). This infrastructure represents two different sustainable development goals, “Affordable and Clean Energy” and “Sustainable Cities and Communities”. The first is obviously illustrated by the solar panel itself, as solar energy is provided abundantly and without cost by the sun, while also leaving no carbon footprint. This is very effective in saving both money and the environment, especially since the camera runs 24/7. The second SDG is introduced by the energy usage; the fact that this energy is contributing to the basic needs of a sustainable city. In a large town, certain security measures are needed for its residents to live safely. This is an example of public service fulfilling their duty to protect people, without posing a threat to the environment.
