Works of Art

Out with my walking group on Sunday, we came across this framed picture in someone's garden, facing the road. We had no idea what it was there for but I looked it up when I got home. It is by George Turner, artist 1841-1910, in the Derbyshire village of Barrow-on-Trent where he lived at one time and raised his family. The village participated in the Heritage Open days in September and installed a number of his paintings around the village.

Gone But Not Forgotten

Memorial plaque, at Thirsk Cricket Club, to George Turner, who died in 2018 a car crash. The talented teenager had risen, with distinction, through the club's junior ranks to play in the First XI.

Captured during the tea interval at a crucial first-versus-second Thirsk fixture against Knaresborough in Division One West of Yorkshire Premier Cricket League North.

Knaresborough won easily, by 166 runs, to leapfrog Thirsk into top spot and open up a nine-point lead, with just two matches of the 2022 season remaining.
