Bayley & Sons, ironmongers and electrical engineers (1880s-1950s). John Charles Bayley (1845-1935) was born in Poole and lived with his wife, Barbara, and family here at Dene House (with the Art College above), Poole Road. He was assisted in the business by two sons, Henry and Frank, and the oldest of his three daughters, Margaret, who was the bookkeeper. He pioneered the electrification of many properties on the West Cliff and was responsible for telegraphic communication locally (note the aerial masts on top of the building). His youngest daughter, who became a schoolteacher, was named Dora Electricia Bayley.
The decorations and image of the Coronation of Edward VII, on the first floor, suggest the photograph dates from 1902.
